Good starting language?

Thread Starter
This might not be the right place to ask, but I just want suggestions.

I'm a very novice programmer, for example, the furthest I ever got with C++ was Hello World, and the furthest I ever got with ASM was adding numbers to the AX register, but I want to start seriously looking at programming now, what I had in mind was programs and game engines, as well as maybe a small OS when I finally become decent - I was wondering if anyone could point out a good language to start me off? I thought C++ myself but VS2012 really doesn't seem to agree with any of the tutorials I try to do.

I would say that starting on C/C++ would be a steep learning curve. Getting used to its syntax, pointers and memory might be a little difficult.

Are you a total beginning? I would say look at java and master that. The c/c++ will be easier to pick up.

I started off just learning C. Its not that difficult really, you just need to understand the logic of the language. From there I went on to objective-c and java.

I'm a total beginner, I've not really achieved much with any language I've ever tried, perhaps I should try Java and move on from that.

Objective-C is Mac OS only isn't it?

I'll give Python a go, as it seems to have quite a small learning curve, thanks.

Python and Java are the best for starting programming because their syntax is simple and is supported on any platform.

I'm not convinced Python is a good starting language if you want to move onto C++. Switching from a white-space formatted language to a C-derivative could be quite a culture shock. So Java would make much more sense in that regard.

Q Basic while obsolete is easy to learn. It is a great Springboard.
