Switch 810, 2/3/4x 7970s, and radiators

Thread Starter
Hi all,

Yes, yet another Switch 810, sorry (if someone can suggest something at roughly the same price point that's good for what I want to do, please do so!).

As it stands, I have 2x7970s, and am about to get a 3820 with an Asus Rampage IV Formula. The intention is to get a third 7970 in a little while. At this point in time, I'm looking at the Switch 810 and Silverstone ST1500, as there's a chance i'll be getting a 4th 7970 down the road.

Quiet is a priority for me, so I'm trying to figure out a solid radiator that cools pretty well but will allow some silence. I'd been looking at the RX360, but I figure I might as well take advantage of the 420mm space. So far, I'm looking at the Black Ice SR-1 420 and Black Ice GT Stealth 420. I know the Stealth is designed for even less air flow than the SR-1, but I'm having difficulty finding any report of its performance. So at the moment, I'm stuck between those two and whatever may be a viable option.

On top of that, my other concern was how much space I'd have on the bottom. I was planning on getting the XSPC Raystorm RX240 kit off frozencpu and throw the RX240 on the bottom, but I'm unsure about clearance on the bottom with such a long PSU there. What I'm wondering is if removing HDD cages on the bottom can resolve this issue (I'll probably only have one SSD + 2 HDD's at most for a while).

Of course, any radiators I get will need to be able to keep 3 or 4 OC'd 7970s + a 3820, which I'll hardly OC if at all, cool in at least a somewhat quiet fashion. I don't need their temps to be insanely low or anything, just healthy.

So yeah, if anyone would like to make suggestions, lend advice, or tell me I'm an idiot for one reason or another, I would deeply appreciate it!

That setup will draw over 1600 watts. You have the wrong case for the job, and in general most cases are not up to the task of fitting the amount of rads needed to cool that much heat. You probably want to look at external setups too.

Oh, really? I hadn't realized that. I remember seeing a post of 3x7970s at 1125/1575 pulling 991W off the wall at peak. My OC wouldn't even reach that, as already one of my cards can barely break 1100MHz core. I don't even up the voltage on them.

Quads can draw over 1600w at max bench crushing clocks. Trifire, well my trifire was pulling over 1300w. Regardless, let's play the scenario out, say you did have to cool 1000w. There's no way to get 1000mm roughly give or take of rad surface into a Switch.

I won't be anywhere near bench crushing clocks. I guess I'm "lucky" like that. If quad-fire leaves me needing to radically invest more than I've been intending, I may for sure dump the idea and stick with tri-fire, which is already the more likely scenario, though so far quad is still in the cards.

What is the goal temperature for 1:1 W:mm ratio? I know it's common for water cooling enthusiasts to love low temps, but I really just want my computer to **** biggrin.gif

I have seen 3x 680s run fine overclocked on a 750W PSU... Do the 7970s really require 2x as much power?

Also, the Switch 810 is an amazing case, you will not regret it. I would go for the EX420 or UT60/XT45 420 over the GTS 420 every single time, and in fact I did. They are just better-rounded rads and don't require 3000rpm fans to work well, but you can still get excellent results at that speed, probably surpassing the GTS, with any of them.

I'm hoping that's the case, but of course the more sources, the better. I'd imagine a response to the 3x680s running on the 750W is, "Yeah, but how long?" But hell if I really know.

I'm not too worried about performance at 3000RPM, as I want things as quiet as can be without unhealthy temperatures.

680s draw 250w, that's 750 on their own w/o cpu/mb/etc. If you unlock them they can consume as much as 7970s.

If you're going to be putting this much hardware into a case, I would (personally) make getting a great case to stuff it all into a priority. If it was me, I'd go CaseLabs, hands down.

That would be straight up awesome. However, as it is, I'm scraping and scratching to put this together. It's doable, and it's happening, but it's taking a lot.
