"Ultrabook" recommendation???

post #1 of 13
Thread Starter
Laptop just died, 4 year old toshiba. Looking for "ultrabook" between $500-1000.
Reason's I want ultrabook
  • Portability
  • Battery Life
  • SSD performance paired with Ivy Bridge

Here's where my issue lies...I look up ultrabooks and I'm getting these devices that have mechanical hard drives....Weren't the intel requirements for an Ultrabook an Intel processor, a certain battery life, and a SSD drive??

Is a 13 inch screen too small for school/work?
I personally would like a 14-15inch screen, and a SSD ranging from 128-256 gigs. I don't care about sound quality, web cam quality, and all that useless bloatware. I want a good laptop that is strictly for class and research.

I frequent newegg and I live near a Microcenter....obviously best buy too lol

Please, anybody have any experience with such products?

Samsung Ultra 5 with a 256 830.

It comes in a range of different configs.

Sandy with 4/6GB RAM

Ivy with 4/6GB RAM.

There is a 13.3" or 14" with optical drive.

I have had one for about a week now, while I sort it out for sisters uni and its really good. I got the ivy version for a good deal and then grabbed the SSD and another 4GB ram stick. It has 4GB soldered on and upto 4GB expansion on 1 DIMM.

For programming its a nightmare because you can't get windows side by side, but for essays or whatever its fine.

This laptop. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834131307

You can upgrade the HDD and RAM easily and it does not affect the warranty.

An SSD is not a hard requirement for an ultrabook, although it could be necessary in order to meet Intel's wake-from-sleep time limits. (Intel's ultrabook requirements for Ivy Bridge are linked below). One way manufacturers can offer reasonable performance with an HDD is to include a small, inexpensive SSD as a cache drive. I suspect that they offer ultrabooks with HDDs to meet certain price points for users who want more than 128 GB of disk space.

At this point, I see the HDD option as benefit to tech-savvy consumers. This is because of the huge price premium an SSD commands when it is factory equipped. You can often replace the factory HDD with a better performing SSD than the OEM offers and do so at a lower price than their step-up option.

Sneak Peek of the Next Wave of Ultrabook Systems

I don't think a 13.3" is too small for school/work. I have evaluated a number of units with this screen size at work. Ultrabooks get noticeably thicker and heavier when making the small jump from a 13.3" to 14.0" screen, which is why I prefer the former. My recommendation would be that you drive out to Microcenter or Best Buy and lay your hands on a few different ultrabooks to further narrow down your wants/needs.

You can open the laptop and change hard drives without effecting the warranty? You say you can get different configurations? Are you referring to buying off the Samsung site?

I have hands-on experience with the following:
* ASUS ZENBOOK (UX31E)
* Dell XPS 13 (L321X)
* Fujitsu LIFEBOOK (U772)
* HP Folio 13-2000 (B2A32UT)
* Samsung Series 5 13.3"
* Samsung Series 5 14.0"
* Samsung Series 9 13.3"
* Toshiba Portege Z830 (S8302)

I personally liked the Samsung Series 5 13.3" the best. As I wrote in another thread, "It does everything well without doing anything great. More importantly, though, it has no obvious drawbacks when all of the other ultrabooks I've looked at have at least one."

Of the models I listed above, the Samsung Series 5 is the only one which has an easy access panel on the bottom for upgrading the RAM and HDD/SSD. The other models required prying off rubber feet, removing as many as 20 screws (of different lengths and heads), and disconnecting multiple ribbon cables. Many of them don't allow RAM upgrades (it is soldered directly onto the motherboard) and who thinks 4 GB of RAM is going to be enough 4 years from now?

For the Samsung Series 5, the last five characters of the model denote the configuration:
A01US = 4 GB RAM and 500 GB HDD (plus 24GB SSD cache)
A02US = 4 GB RAM and 128 GB SSD
A03US = 8 GB RAM and 128 GB SSD

I own the Series 5 like I said... This is it sat next to my retina macbook pro it is only a tiny bit thicker.

1. Yup. I phoned them and said that I was doing it and they said there was no issues.
2. The stores tend to stock the different models.
3. Just have a look around your local stores and see what you think.

Asus Zenbook Series
Beutiful Design
Great performance to price
I believe they all have SSD
Great Battery Life

http://blog.laptopmag.com/intel-ivy-bridge-benchmarked-on-asus-zenbook-ux31a-lenovo-thinkpad-x230-thinner-and-faster-than-ever

This is a good comparison of some of the ultrabooks

When these things first arrived November I think with the 2nd gen core series I was carrying both sizes to go lock in our safe till we could get them loaded with the required software and everyone I worked with stopped me and said what is that.

It really is a stunning design you must see it in person.

The screen is great as well

As for your question about the screen size. The answer is yes and no. For portability you do not want a bigger screen and you are on the right track choosing an ultrabook. But it is very easy to set up a cheap docking station at home. What you do is just buy a $20 monitor stand kinda of thing that your monitor and its stand sits on top of and underneath you can sit your laptop with enough room for a cooler as well if you feel its necisarry. Then you just simply have a hub and video and you plug the 2 in and your done. This is what I do with my 13" and I wouldn't want anything bigger in fact I would mind a smaller unit.

My brother owns a Zenbook Prime and it's amazing for its price point (around $1000 in some stores). It is so thin that people mistake it for a Macbook Air and it is exceptionally light for the power it packs. It is amazingly quick, thanks to its SSD. The chiclet keyboard is backlit as well, if you care about that. The battery lasts literally forever...about six hours of constant use, and when in idle, you won't have to charge for several days. Finally, and the best spec in my opinion, is the fact that it has an IPS 1080p panel, which is exceptionally rare and amazing on a laptop of its size.

Some cons include the smaller screen size (11.6" I believe) and the fact that you can't really upgrade anything on it aside from the SSD (my brother told me that the RAM was soldered in). Can't really do much with the upgrading and the smaller screen size helps with the portability factor.

that all sounded so perfect until you said 11 inch screen...lol
I'll have to see it in person at a store. 1080p is really good for these ultrabooks, just wish that one was 13inches
