AM3+ motherboard for overclocking? - that goes well with AMD FX-4100

i am looking for a new motherboard for my AMD FX-4100. i currently own the ASUS M5A97 and my GPU is EVGA GeForce superclocked GTX 560 ti 1GB . i just love to overclock and the board i have now is ok, but there are better ones for overclocking. anybody know of a good overclocking mobo that suits the FX-4100. thanks for your time! biggrin.gif

I have the sabertooth and am very happy with the board. Although I must say that you probably are not going to see a much higher OC although you might see lower temps. My experience switching from the same board as you was that with different settings of the digi+ vrm I was able to achieve the same OC with a lower voltage but not a higher maximum OC.

The 990FX chipset is awesome though and I use the powered esata all the time. It is nice to be able to use just a single cable to go from a 2.5" drive to the back of the computer and transfer data. It also has an unpowered esata connector so 2 esata connectors in total and at least one of them maybe both support the ability to run multiple sata devices off of one sata port. So if you have a sata port multiplier this motherboard is compatible without having to insert an add in card.

Lots of other nice things about it.

Also if you have a case that has a hole in the motherboard tray so that you can access the heatsink bracket from the rear then you can put a small fan behind the motherboard that will drastically cool the VRMs which in turn will significantly cool the CPU. I also put a fan above the vrms as well. I have my CPU water cooled and even with water cooling it seems for every 3-4 degrees I drop the VRMs the CPU drops about 2 degrees. So it is worth it to actively cool the VRMs on these Digi+ boards.


So anyways either of the Asus high end boards is gonna rock!

I'd be very surprised if a board upgrade gives you more than a 5% improvement in stable OC clock, less is more likely, especially since you are already on a board with a respectably robust VRM configuration and "just" a 4100. Upgrading to a different MOBO will, as I'm sure you are aware, be a poor return on investment performance wise. A $200 Samsung 830 256GB SSD would be a far better choice of upgrade to give the system a kick in the rear.
