AM3+ motherboard for overclocking? - that goes well with AMD FX-4100 - Page 2

I would use either the Crosshair Formula V or 990FXA-UD7. Both are solid boards, the Crosshair V has more bells and whistles.

I wouldn't bother with the Crosshair V (even though I did just order one to replace my dead UD3), if you have the choice to wait a few weeks, do it. The Crosshair V Formula-Z is coming out and boasts a few new features as well as even better memory support. From the sites I've looked at, many say early September, but a couple online retailers have it listed as "Sept 15" or "Ships in 3 weeks", so, maybe middle September.

If that is true being that any upgrade for you is already going to be VERY marginal I would DEF wait... I would do some research to find out what you really stand to gain on this new board and if anything at all and the price isn't higher I would wait. You already have a good board which from the overclocking side is really only missing the Digi+ controlls everything else is the TONS of features you get with the NB/SB combo on the other boards.

Not gonna happen. I mean that, they don't really have any reason too. I settled for the AsRock 990fx Extreme 4. I've 2 builds with the extreme 4 and 1 with the the extreme 3. I haven't done any OCing since it's plenty fast but, the Extreme 4 is an 8+2 phase.

Look into the Crosshair V Formula-Z, it's pretty awesome if you can hold out for it. Yes, it's only marginally better than the Crosshair V Formula that we have now, but- it supports and is rated to take DDR3-2400, has even more improved Digi+ control for its overclocking, and they went nuts with upgrading the onboard audio (if thats your thing). The onboard audio on that board -looks- amazing.

The price is also sweet, so far what I've seen would put it at $235-$245 USD, which isn't much more than the CHV. Well worth the small upgrades to the board. (Subject to change, but so far it looks this way!)

I have the sabertooth and like it a lot. Btw I really like the post about putting a fan on the back side.. Great idea if it helps.
All of the boards mentioned are very nice.
Do some research on vrms and power supplies in the forums. I learned a lot on this build but im not qualified enough to explain .. yet.

a good quality power supply, a board with good vrms and decent memory,

But seriously if you want to take the same money and see a vast improvement on your computer an ssd cant be beat for price vs performance.
I was simply amazed at the improvement.

So in short, new revisions of boards are comming out. thunderbolt is around the corner or supported already if that suits you but
in your system i think a ssd would be a great investment for now.

Like the above poster said. :>
