Advice on Temps and Cooling

Thread Starter
This is my first real overclocking machine. I've got the build in my sig, but the relevant parts are here:
Corsiar 600T
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo
Intel i5 2500k

All parts right now are stock, and all three of the case fans are connected to the controller on the front of the case. All tests were performed with them set as high as the knob will turn. Once I got my build up and running (a whole other story), I tweaked the BIOS to what I consider "base" and ran a 12 hour Prime 95 test. By base, I mean I set the ratio to 34, manually set voltage to 1.125, and CPU Fixed Frequency to 350. I also tweaked the fan settings for my CPU cooler in the BIOS. Mostly I just set the upper temp to 50, meaning that when the core temps break past 50C the fan spins up to 100%.

Another note, I haven't completed burn-in, but I don't imagine that makes a difference of more than a degree or two?

When I ran my 12 hour blend test, my results were as below:
Ambient: Roughly 23C at the high point.
Core Temp High Water Marks: 55C, 60C, 57C, 55C
On average it was a couple degrees cooler than what I have listed, but still typically in the mid-50s.

I had hoped to keep my CPU under 65, but I'm pushing 60 at what is essentially stock voltage and clock. Is my cooling just insufficient? I've also noticed that the middle two cores are always a few degrees hotter than the others, even at idle. I'm not sure if that's really unusual or not.

At this point I'm not sure what to do. Do I add more fans somewhere? Switch out my 200 MMs for dual 120s? Take them off the case controller and attach them to the mobo (though I'm not sure that would buy me anything)? I've read that adding a second fan to my 212 only gets you one or two degrees. Do I need to switch to something like the H100? I've never tried water cooling before, but I'd be willing to give it a go.

Or better yet, is this normal and my expectations are just way off? I'd like to get to a clock of 4.5, but I just don't think that's possible with the cooling that I have presently.

Any help would be appreciated.

What are your ambient temps?
Are those stock fans on your air cooler?

Ambient in the room is roughly 23C. It varies between 22-23 depending on whether the air conditioner is actively running at the moment or not.

All the fans right now are stock.

You will be able to easily hit 4.2-4.5ghz with that hyper 212, SB chips are good to about 90c. I have seen mine hit mid-high 70's so don't worry about 60c lol

I'd say if you wanna keep that heatsink, go for some better fans.
You can find them used in the marketplace here at OCN for a pretty decent price. Since you have a fan controller, you'll benefit more with a custom fan profile with stronger fans.

But I thought the processor was only good to somewhere like 72C?

I don't HAVE to stay with this heatsink, the idea of switching to the H100 is interesting to me. I'm probably going to need better case fans either way, I haven't even started running tests with my video card running at the same time. Using the on-CPU graphics during tests right now, so when I'm actually running with everything full blast, it's probably going to get fairly warm in that case.

Any particular brands or models of fans I should look for? Or is it all just about throughput?

That's the tcase you are referring to not tjunction, they are different, max safe temps for 2nd gen core i3/i5/i7 is around 100c, you don't want to be there, ideally anything below 90c should be good for 24/7 operation and obviously if you can get it lower then that's a good thing. Unless you're doing extreme overclocking you will likely not exceed 80c when stress testing (occt/intel burn test) which stress your CPU far more than real world usage, so even though you might hit those temps with stress testing you will likely not exceed 70c in real world useage.

Disagree. Don't go above 70c for 24/7 anything.

If you're into the H100, you could also look into custom watercooling loops. There are plenty of guides and its easier and safer than most people think, and you get really good results for OC'ing

I'd considered a custom loop when I decided to put this together, but I wasn't sure about it. Mostly because I'm not wonderful with the hands on stuff. I'm sure I could cool the CPU just fine, and anything that I didn't have to remove a pre-existing heatsink from. But water-cooling, say, my video card? Probably a little beyond what I'd be comfortable with. And if all I'm cooling is my CPU I figured why not look into one of the self-contained models.

Any proof that exceeding 70c will have any kind of affect on the chip? they are good to 95c and start throttling at 100c, yes, you don't want it running that hot, however I am pointing out that his current concerns with it at 60c are invalid, I am not telling him to run his chip at 100c. anything upto 80c for everyday use I would consider safe, there's no need to buy a custom watercooling loop to oc a sandybridge to 4.5ghz
