I would wait for a single card. Maybe something more then GTX580 if you want a big upgrade.

being on a very tight budget is the thing though its going to cost around 140 max to crossfire the 5850 wheres even a gtx 580 here in aus is pushing over 300+

Probably not worth it with only 1gb VRAM for 1080p, unless you find a ridiculously cheap 5850 somewhere.

But saving for a GTX580? Definitely not. One of the newer cards for sure - a 2gb 7850, 3gb 7950 (on sale) or a GTX670 depending on your budget, all with overclocks are the best value upgrades from your point.

I think 5850s in x-fire can handle almost anything at that resolution.

i've come to this same predictament.. except i have a 5770, i've decided to go with a cheap 2 gb 7850. it's a about twice as much as the 5850 that you want to crossfire but still would put out more power than 2 i.m.o.. can't be overclocked to faster speeds but should handle anything i throw at it on 1080p res. plus should settle nicely for the future till something bigger comes along : ) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102998

Powercolor HD 7950 - $300

http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=193_1311&products_id=20827

pccasegear had the gigabyte hd 7950 too selling for 300 bucks but it sold out. You could just wait to watch for good deals on any of the other HD 7950s like sapphire at pccasegear. Sell your HD 5850 and get a HD 7950 OC. Overclock your HD 7950 tot 1.1+ Ghz and you will easily beat HD 5850 CF. Also if your HD 5850 has 1 GB you are not going to be able to play the latest games like BF3 at highest settings as you will run out of VRAM. Also a single GPU is always better than a multi GPU solution. the HD 7950 is 3 - 5% slower than HD 7970 at the same clockspeed. Its the best value for your money.

Don't get another HD5850 unless it is really cheap.
First because of only 1 GB VRAM and second because of the lackluster and weak Tessellation DirectX11 performance.
GTX 580 will be a good upgrade for you if you can find one for cheap. You will get around 45-50% in DirectX9-10 games. & over 60% in DirectX11.

You can get a second 5850 for $100 here. With two 5850's, you'll be able to max out every new game at 1080p. You probably won't run into memory issues for a while, but keep in mind that the 5800 series is still old tech at this point, so you'll have poor tessellation performance. If I were in your shoes (and I will be in your same shoes soon), I'd get a 7870 or 7850 and replace the 5850 altogether. It's not worth it to crossfire older cards at this point.
