Building a sick RIG! Need RAM Advice!

Looking to buy corsair RAM!

Set-up thus far

ASRock Extreme 6 Mobo
i5 3570k
No GPU yet.

I want to get at least 16GB of RAM is 1866 mhz worth it at all?

I was looking at the Corsair Platinum ones, they seem overpriced but sooo sexy.

Assuming this is your first build -

1) What are you using the computer for? Gaming only needs 8GB maximum. Video Editing, however, would utilise the 16GB you desire.
2) Nobody really cares how awesome your RAM looks. (Sorry, but that's truthful)
3) 1886Mhz isn't really that much of a money maker. G.Skill Ripjaws-X will serve you fine at 1600Mhz, I have 8GB and that rarely gets used to it's full extent, even when I'm processing 1080p footage with Sony Vegas 11.

Also - ASRock tend to be a bad brand for Motherboard's, at least from what I've seen (And they have a fairly high failure rate compared to other brands). That's off topic, but I'm just saying, ASUS is probably the way to go. CPU is an excellent choice.

Don't let me impeach what you want, that's up to you, but I can just provide advice.

Well the RAM appeal is for me really no one else. tongue.gif

I've also read reviews for this Mobo and they were good. I'm going for gaming mostly.

I guess I can do Corsair Dominator 12gb @ 1600 mhz., anything more does seem a bit pointless. Heck maybe even 12 GB is a little pointless.

Take a look ^.^:

I like mobos with nice heatsinks/colour, can't stand that teal/turquoise look, anything you can recommend?

12Gb sounds like a triple module kit, you will want a kit for dual channel ( 2 or 4 modules of whatever size). For speed, gamers don't usually see too much difference with faster memory, if you don't care about benchmark scores 1600Mhz will get the job done.
I haven't had much faith in Asrock, although they do look to be improving. For an average 4.5Ghz kind of overclock most owners here seem pretty satisfied with their asrock boards.

I agree with everything you are saying here except that asrock is a bad brand of motherboard. They are completely fine I would put them against asus any day - and I currently own both.

but yes haunter, unless you are video editing or anything like that, you would probably never use anything above 6 gigs of ram and besides giving you some head room, 8 happens to be the sweet spot for price. 1600 mhz will do you just fine.

I have some kingston hyperX in my wifes rig and I think it looks pretty badass. I have also seen the red ripjaws ram in person and its a nice dark red. there are some sticks made by geil that I really like the look of.

I'll just go with an 8GB Vengeance Dual Channel then.

Maybe I'll add on 8 more when I need it. Thanks a lot guys. smile.gif

This, vengeance tends to suck as far as memory goes for overclocking. The samsung is about the best price/performance memory you can get right now.
