Get an AM3 board or LGA775?

Thread Starter

Hey,

Here's my dilemma: I've got a Athlon II X2 270 that does 4025Mhz stable on stock voltage. I also recently bought an E2180 to replace it when I get a board and OC the crud out of it. I'm trying to figure out if getting an AM3 motherboard that supports overclocking is more with it (With a voltage boost, I could probably push 4.5Ghz with this chip.), or get a LGA 775 Motherboard and OC the E2180. I'm not even sure if the E2180 is a better performer than a II X2 270.

Which way should I go?!?

Get the am3 board then later you can upgrade to those ridiculously cheap Phenom II's. You can get the 955 or 965 on sale for around $80 now.

This,
No matter what way you look at it the AM3 board is better, it also supports DDR3 which is cheaper then DDR2 now compared to most Socket 775 boards using DDR2.

The AM3 board will be new (most likely) and has support for unlocked multipliers etc on the Phenoms and such. I'd also suggest a 970 board for the AMD processor.

I think the Athlon is actually faster too, but It uses more power I believe.

That and you already have a "Golden Chip" so to speak.

My own E4500, and my E2160 before it, both at 3 GHz, operate just the same as my unlocked Sempron 140 @ 3 GHz. Also, i have not heard of many E2xxx CPU's getting to 4 GHz (my own E2160 gave quite a bit of heat at 3 GHz, and that was with an H70)

I'd actually get either a better Core2Duo, or a Phenom II. Good C2D's (from the 7000-8000 families) can easily get to 4 GHz, and with the price cuts AMD has announced, you could fetch a nice budget CPU, even a quad core.

If you go the 775 way, it is hard to beat the Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R. It is hailed as one of the best OCing motherboards, and you can find one used for under $100 in the marketplace. If you go the Am3 way, sadly i have no info on it, but Asus makes good mobos. Before deciding on any mobo though, i'd suggest you check this guide to check which mobos you should not choose for OCing.

EP45-UD3P is actually better, but any board from that range is a great OC'er!

I'd suggest a E8500 for the board if you decide to go 775 and P45.. But from what I sold mine for you'd pay too much for the performance (E8500 sold for $90, Q9400 sold for $135) - $10 less then what I paid for it 6 months before.

If you're going to go with the AMD board, you may be better off with an i3 or Pentium on the cheap and a moderate board on the Intel side. Then you can upgrade to a 2500k/3570k and get some real performance! smile.gif

I'd say AM3 board then later when you want more power or have money get a PIIX4 960T and use ACC to try and unlock the other 2 cores. Not sure if they're available in US as readily (someone made a comment they were hard to find?) but they're stocked somewhat well in Canada.

unless you have q9550 and a ddr3 775 board i think the am3 might be the winner here. but, if you have a 775 ddr3 it might not matter if you have q9950 some of those c2d/c2qs oc rather well.
