Rampage 4 Extreme with 3 Way SLI

Thread Starter
I just ordered a 3rd GTX 680 and Ive been reading through the motherboard manual and it says that I should hook up a 6 pin power for the PCIe for your doing multiple video cards. I figured I would have to do it for 4 way SLI but my question is, do I have to do it for 3 way SLI?

I would probably use the 6pin mobo power for three gtx680s if it was me. But I wouldn't think you'd need it for the very power efficient 680s.

Three gtx580s or 480s then yeah, I'd use it for sure.

I have an RIVE with 3 way SLI using the Asus reference GTX680. I used the 3 way set-up without the additional 6 PIN PCI-e connector for three weeks until I ordered an extension cable to reach the rather awkward location of the additional 6 PIN socket.

I experienced no problems before or afterwards either gaming (BF3, Crysis 2) or movie watching/general PC use. Three reference cards I would think would be fine without the additional power, but some of the factory overclocked/non-reference cards may need it by default. Asus are just advocating "best practices" here.

Thanks man that's all i needed to know, I really don't want to run a cable there because of the position. And I will be running reference cards in this set up.
