RAM and Overclocking

That's my build:

Core i7 920 @ 4GHz
6GB Corsair 1600...
ASUS Rampage II Extreme

I bought the bundle pre-overclocked three years ago, and ever touched any overclock settings in bios. It's been working superbly. Recently I planned to increase some memory however on my instructions (given by the shop who built it) it says:

Note - Please note that adding in additional memory to the spare slots will require new BIOS settings and the maximum clock speed attainable may be significantly reduced.

Does that mean I can't install another 6GB of the same memory without losing my overclock?

you can install. you might have to increase some voltages though

Thanks. What if I replace these with 4GB ones (I have 3 x 2GB modules now). Pricewise there shouldn't be much difference considering I can sell these pretty quickly.

1366 is a bit weird when it comes to RAM and overclocking. If you have more than 8GB and all you are doing is gaming (or anything other than video editing) then you should probably keep the configuration as is.

If you REALLY need to upgrade, Then the best way to do it would be to upgrade to 24GB (3x8GB) of RAM ( I am assuming you have 12GB already ). That is going to be bloody expensive, but the 1366 socket prefers to have higher density RAM utilizing 3 dimm slots vs having lower density ram occupying 6 dimm slots.

If that is just simply out of your budget, then what you would need to do is scrap all of your ram and try to get 1866 or higher ram speeds in the capacity you would need and then intentionally lower that speed on your computer to lower your RAM voltages. If you can decrease the Dram voltage while at 1600mhz with 9-9-9-24 timings, then you would decrease the load on your CPU.

Lastly, you could simply get a better CPU cooler and try to push more volts through your CPU while still keeping the CPU cool.

Any way you slice it, you will be spending possibly more money on RAM that you might not even truly need. If you tell us what you need the ram for and what sort of issues you are having, maybe we could help you optimize the system to the point where you wouldn't even need more ram at all smile.gif

Adding more memory will likely require some adjustments to maintain the same OC.

6x4 isn't necissarily going to limit anything more than 3x8, it just needs special consideration.

I have four LGA-1366 systems, three of them with 24GiB in 6x4GiB configurations. CPU core OC isn't affected at all, but this does limit max uncore and memory clocks.

Also, for the record, 8GiB DIMMs have dropped in price dramatically as of late.

For the i7 930 and the 950 you are correct, the 920 seems to favor less dimms. At least that was the way it was with my old 920 and two of my friends 920 chips. Thankfully I was able to exchange my chip for the i7 950 and two other friends have the 930. Every time you occupy all the ram slots on the 920, it needs about 0.05 volts more than if you were to use higher density ram and use only 3 slots. Across 3 platforms with 5 different sets of ram and all sorts of BIOS settings, the 920 preferred to use only 3 slots.

Now as soon as you jump to the 930 or 950 it doesn't matter at all. Even if we use the same mobo and just switch out the CPU, it still gives us the same results. I did find that weird myself considering that I don't think intel changed the memory controller on the the 930/40/50/60 vs the 920, but I can't really argue with the results we got..... not matter how confusing they were wth.gif

Lastly, the 8GB dimms have gone down in price, that much is true, but if the OP was planning on spending maybe 75 dollar for 12GB it is a whole lot less than spending 150 dollars on a 24GB kit tongue.gif

Among Bloomfield/Nehalem chips I've had four 920s, three 950s, a Xeon E5503, a Xeon W3540. There is as much difference between chips of the same model as between different models. All of my samples them handled six dimms differently than three, but this was a function of uncore multiplier, memory timings, and QPI/VTT, core speed was almost never a factor.

Also, all Bloomfields of the same stepping have identical design, including IMC. Doesn't matter much if it's a 920, a 965, or a Xeon W3580; they could well all have been cut from the same wafer.

Thank you guys. I have 6GB now (3x2GB modules), not 12GB. I just wanna upgrade to 12GB.

It seems complicated and I don't know much overclocking at all. If I replace these with 3x4GB similar modules, would I be alright?
