H60 + Intel Core i7 870

Hello!

I seem to be having temperature problems with Intel's stock cooler and I decided to go for a H60 as it's around the money limit I can give at this point.

I read 1-2 reviews one of which showed that with 4,8GHz Overclocked 2600k it is running around 60C. It looks a little too good to be true, so I decided to ask, what temps would I get with an i7 870? Stock and overclocked (Around 4GHz for example)? Please, everyone who has this cooler - tell me what was the improvement over the stock Intel cooler. Now I'm getting around and over 70C when gaming at stock clocks so this is way too high at least for my standards and want to pump it down a little bit. I don't mind noise, I just want a cool system. biggrin.gif

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Oh and for the H60, it's water cooling and.. What thermal paste should I use? Normal one or there are special ones for water cooling?

The H series all come with paste pre applied, it's supposed to be pretty good but you can change it if you want. I don't think its necessary.

But 70 C is hot for stock, that sounds more like what the stock cooler should do...

I don't have an 870 but I have an H80 with my 3570K, I'd say reseat the cooler and see if that helps. Also, how is it mounted in your case? and how are the rest of the case fans set up?

It's not because of the airflow or anything, it's just Intel's stock cooler. I think you missunderstood me. I don't have H60, I'm willing to buy one. 70C = stock cooler. But mind that it's pretty hot in my room as it's summer, it's over 30C daytime. I lowered my voltage to 1,07V and now I'm getting 60s. It's better now, but I need to overclock anyways. It comes with a thermal paste? That's incredible! Honestly, I didn't have any good thermal paste, I'd buy the stupidest one just because of the price.

And another thing, I usually don't mind noise but just out of curiosity, will it be louder than the stock cooler?

IMO the stock cooler that comes with the chips pretty much sucks. I ran the stock cooler on my 920 for a week while I was waiting on an h50 and like you my temps (in florida) hovered at 28-30c inside, my poor cpu would hit 60-70c stock during the day. The little h50 served me well for a long time and let me OC to 3.8-4ghz and keep my temp in check. Albeit I now run a dedicated 480mm loop for my cpu now I still have my little h50 in its box just in case I need it.

In terms of noise YES it will be louder than your stock cooler, it might even annoy you for a day or so but before long you wont even know its there. I sit with 4 2k fans sucking air through a 20fpi rad 2' from my head and I forget its there haha.

There are great thermal pastes out there and they do really make a difference especially if you OC but the h series coolers have paste pre-applied.

I believe they use Shin-Etsu? (could be wrong)... but Shin is the good stuff so no need to buy more.

Well, if they have a really good thermal paste and if they're so effective, I don't mind the noise that much. When I play, I always turn up my GPU's FANs to MAX so I'm used to the noise and after 2-3 mins I don't even hear it (like you said).

Awesome. Thanks!

I ordered it but I want to ask another thing.

The H60 has 2 parts. 1 for the CPU and 1 with the fan and etc. Can I put the 2nd one outside the case so it doesn't heat it too much?
