HD 6850 over 100c

Thread Starter
Playing just cause 2, CPUID Hardware Monitor tells me my HD 6850 is over 100c.

If I delve into the gubbins and take the heatsink off am I likely to find poor contact with the GPU?

I'm wondering if it's because I run 2 monitors off it.

Even on idle, having a second monitor pushes the memory up to 1000 andthe temp to 58c.

This goes back down to the 40's when I unplug the second monitor.

I'll just unplug one and see.

if removing and reseating the heatsink doesnt help all that much, then you can try to get a pci express slot cooler and see if that helps at all.

Maybe, maybe.

I took the heatsink off and removed some of the paste that was already on it, it was really thick, but it doesn't seem to have made a any of difference at all.

Are those single fan coolers by Arctic Cooling any good?

So you just scraped some paste off and stuck the heatsink back on? Because that is bad, don't do that. You need to get some thermal paste to put on when you take all the old off. I use Prolimatech PK-1 but really anything should work fine, be sure to clean the surface of the GPU with some 90%+ isopropyl alcohol to make sure the surface is clean.

Why is that bad?

The idea of thermal paste is to have it as thin as possible, and it was thick so I scraped it off the heatsink.

It wasn't dry or cured, still plenty squidgy so I think it should do it's job of getting into any air pockets.

I'd like to know what paste they use as stock before putting anything new on, it can't be all that bad.

I think it just needs a better heatsink/fan, this one goes at over 60% just with two monitors on idle, but I wonder why this one is hot and most of the reviews of the XFX 6850 are about 20c cooler.
