HD 6850 over 100c - Page 3

Thanks for confirm.
It's the ZNFS model - which I can't find on their website - XFX styled plastic shroud, single fan and a heatsink on the VRM's (I think they call them), no vapour chambers or coolers from other manufacturers etc.

Unless there's some reason that air is repelled from processor packaging surfaces?

You got the first part right. Lapping a CPU has fairly controversial results, some people get better temps, some don't. I don't really want to derail the thread through. When you apply paste and then press the heatsink down it spreads out evenly with no air (unless you applied wrong), ideally there will be no or very very very little amounts of air between the surfaces. When you take the heatsink off and stick it back on it creates bubbles of air because the paste is not being spread, just stuck back together.

That being said feel free to do what you want, just don't complain here if your card is broken because you refused to pay $5 to repaste it. thumb.gif

I think the model is Russian market specific, but it's a good cooler. Get some new thermal material and some alcohol to clean it off with and you'll be good to go.

That explains it, they don' t need cooling in Northern Siberia.

I doubt that new paste will make much difference, though, unless it's going to bring a 20c
drop. I've been using Arctic Silver Ceramiq on my CPU's and never noticed more than a couple of degrees difference over stock stuff.

If the paste is old or there isn't enough or it isn't getting good contact it can. I've repasted laptops and got 20C differences (year or two old) and I've redone some others and dropped their temps by 40C (4+ years old) so anything is possible. tongue.gif

Do we have any peer reviewed engineering papers on reusing thermal paste and getting air trapped?

Why isn't the air squeezed out when the heatsink gets screwed down?

Why isn't air trapped during tht normal first time application when you bring the two surfaces together?

Not being cheeky, but it sounds like urban mythology to me, but if it's true I'd like to know.

And no, I won't blame you wink.gif

Well, I repasted an 8600 GTS the other week, the paste had become dry and crumbly - which I assume is not optimal - and the Ceramiq made virtually no difference. Maybe thermal paste technology has moved on so that stuff made in the last few years is all pretty much similar.

I wonder if some units come out of the factory with poor contact between heatsink an GPU, there's no way to look at it when it's on.

How do people go about telling if there is good processor/heatsink contact, apart from looking to see if the paste has been squished - which could still happen with incomplete contact if there is a thick layer?

I don't know of any engineering papers about it but it made sense to me when I learned about it. The way I see it is for $5 every couple years (depends on how much you repaste) you might as well just redo it for peace of mind.

Most thermal paste is good stuff. Some is better though, and it usually costs more. The general rule of thumb I've used is to apply the paste, run the computer hot for a couple hours, check the spread, reapply it again fixing the previous issues if there are any.
