The Federal Communications Commission is eyeing a proposal to tax broadband Internet service.

The move would funnel money to the Connect America Fund, a subsidy the agency created last year to expand Internet access.

The FCC issued a request for comments on the proposal in April. Dozens of companies and trade associations have weighed in, but the issue has largely flown under the public's radar.

If the money was actually put toward expanding and improving internet service (since the big phone companies obviously have no desire nor incentive to do so), I wouldn't really have a problem with a (small) tax on internet services. Alas, we all know this money will just go to general revenue for ever more pork barreling and rich people / corporate bailouts.

i really wonder if most of you even read the source befor posting its not free internet its expanding it to areas that are stuck on dailup or no internet i dont see how thats bad. More taxes but not the worst tax we have to pay.

Last year, the FCC overhauled a $4.5 billion portion of the Universal Service Fund and converted it into a broadband Internet subsidy, called the Connect America Fund. The new fund aims to subsidize the construction of high-speed Internet networks to the estimated 19 million Americans who currently lack access.

What the hell? The internet is already costing people enough money a month, don't think we need a tax on this so the government can make more money. I know in Australia to get a 8mbps Download Line speed and 1mbps upload so 800/100kbps it costs $70 a month with a 100GB Usage, every other company is cheaper but offer such crappy connection speeds and latency.

And again why should we pay for that expansion when ISP's will reap the benefit. Make the ISPs pay for it instead.

I don't live in 'merica but i am sure you guys already pay a tax on internet.

Taxes in a certain amount is good if they go to people who are actually not greedy and want to create something with a true purpose for someone else.

There is a problem though - today the good guys are even more outnumbered than in a long time. With no improvement to anyone.
