+1 on the 75-300

Piece. of. sheet.

Save your pennies and get good lenses from the get go and save yourself the money. Also, look on Costco's website, they have had a Manfrotto hit up on there for ~$100 that is solid. Other than that, the 055XProB is a great place to start. It can hold my 5D+70-200/2.8 sturdily.

Manfrotto 55XProb / 190 pro B are the default choice for a non-carbon tripod for more than a decade.

All the cheap 70-300 4-5.6 etc zooms have been performing weakly even with film SLRs, where the average amateur would print it 6 x 4 / or 5 x 7 in...
Early digitals @ 6-8MP were already pushing them hard...now, with sensors 3x that, those lenses are cool for the guy that has to have "zoom", but that's it.

One of the main reasons to go canon, is the affordable f/4 L line of zooms. The cheapest of them all, the EF-L 70-200 f4 is an amazing lens. Period.
If you really want a tele-zoom, do not overthink it. Add the EF-S 15-85 and you probably have one of the best crop kits available regardless of system/brand.

Oh! forgot, if your on a budget for a telephoto lens, the EF-s 55-250 IS is a killer starter kit lens. (Given that you accept its limitations)

My vote for a budget TP is a Slik Pro. It's not the best, and it's heavy, but heavy = stable. You can't budge that thing. Also, it's tall fully extended. So if you are 6'+, you won't have to bend over just to frame your shot.

Edit:

Look at replacing the head though. It can hold my 70-300L lens just fine and even the 100-400 without much movement, but you would be better served in something else.
