PSU issue or CD-ROM issue

Alright, this is a bit weird to me. Here is the deal: I have recently started a new PC build and came upon a weird issue and don't know if it's PSU or CD-Rom related.

I am using a Coolmax 1200w PSU

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817159123&Tpk=coolmax%20power%20supply

Specs:
TypeATX 12V v2.3 / EPS 12V v2.92Maximum Power1200WFans1 x 140mm fanPFCActiveMain Connector24Pin+12V RailsSinglePCI-Express Connector6 x 6+2-PinSATA Power Connector12SLIReadyCrossFireReadyModularModularEfficiency87%Energy-Efficient80 PLUS GOLD CertifiedOver Voltage ProtectionYesInput Voltage115 / 230 VOutput+3.3V@25A, +5V@25A, +12V@100A, -12V@0.8A, +5VSB@6.0AApprovalsCE, CB, TUV, FCC, UL, CUL, and BSMI certified.

Anyways, I was using this PSU on my old build as well. Well, it's the same build actually, except I've switched over to a watercooling loop (CPU+GPU) and a new Full Tower case.
The main molex and SATA power cables from the PSU are all being used by other components so I plugged additional SATA connectors into the PSU (since it's semi-modular).

This brings us to the issue. When I powered up the system, I immediately noticed smoke coming out of the CD-Rom Sata power connector so I unplugged it real quick. I've noticed that I forgot to plug the Sata3.0 cable into the motherboard redface.gif so I thought this is the reason smoke was coming out of the CD-Rom. I plugged the 3.0sata into the motherboard and once again, there was smoke coming from the CD-Rom where the power adapter connects to.
I don't know if I just have a bad CD-Rom or if something is wrong with the power cable. I have not had any issues with either the power connector nor CD-Rom drive prior to switching the components over to the new case and installing the water loop.

Thinking that the power connector was the issue, I tried a different PSU but had smoke pouring out of the Cd-Rom power connector again. What could be going on?

Would a short perhaps cause an issue like this? I've noticed that with the backplate on my GPU full-cover waterblock my monitor wasn't powering up. After I took the backplate off, the monitor powered up.
But why would smoke still be coming out of the CD-Rom connector using the other independent PSU if this was the case?
