Worth the upgrade?

Thread Starter
lately I've been considering an upgrade from my GTX 460 sli to a Radeon 7950. I looked at some recent benchmarks
http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/08/23/galaxy_gtx_660_ti_gc_oc_vs_670_hd_7950/1 and the 7950 (OC) can really do some work. I can get it for 300 on the egg!

A question for 7950 owners. How do you like the card? Does it run smooth? How are your temps and overclocks on it? I would also like to know if the 7950 runs smoothly in crossfire as I may still double up down the road.

Is it worth the upgrade? I know my 460 sli setup is pretty powerful, but I'm in the mood for a single card setup for now. Also, would my i5-750 bottleneck a 7950 @ 3.6ghz?
What's going on.

i guess a single HD7950 will be an upgrade. anandtech bench shows you will have an increase of 8-10 fps, so go for it. would have a lower power consumption, so a little easier on your PSU too. it shouldnt bottleneck your i5-750, but you might want to OC it higher if it does so. if not, no biggie.

Word thanks man. I know it won't be a crazy upgrade performance wise, but it would be a nice upgrade for temps, power, cable management, and more case space.

Another question, how are AMD's drivers lately? I haven't used a radeon card since the 3870.

Honestly, it all depends what kinda games do you play, and do you really feel the need to upgrade?

AMD drivers are better than they used to be, more or less on par with Nvidia.
Though honestly, I would get a GTX 670 instead of a 7950 and OC it to GTX 680 speeds.

The extra Vram you get from the AMD will not be much help if you dont game at higher res than 1080p.

till this day, i personally never had a problem with my card, just not related with drivers. i updated it last week or so, and i never got any crashes in games like GTA4 or GTA San Andreas, portal 2, terraria and minecraft. so i think the "drivers of amd is bad go buy nvidia" is bs, as i never had any problems with my card in the last 3 years i had it.

GTX670 is better than the 7950, if OP can spend $100 more.

An i5 750 @ 3.6ghz shouldn't bottleneck a 7950 at all. I would upgrade to a 7950. Extra vram will help in future games, less heat, and less power draw.

You really won't notice a performance hit. 7950 is a beast of a card and they overclock great too.
OP a single HD 7950 overclocked to 1.15 Ghz is faster than GTX 460 SLI and in fact even GTX 560 SLI. Also with the GTX 460 1GB in SLI you would run out of VRAM while trying to max out game like BF3 with Ultra 4x MSAA at 1080p. The HD 7950 is an amazing card for its price. And you would not be facing any multi GPU issues like micro stuttering with a single HD 7950. Get a HD 7950 with a HD 7970 PCB design like the Sapphire HD 7950 Vapor-X. 8 phase power, high quality Diamond chokes and 8 pin + 6 pin power. This card is built for overclocking and the Vapor-x cooler can cool the chip efficiently with low fan noise.

Define better.

Depending on the game the 7950 at stock clocks is faster than the 670, in other games the 670 is faster than the 7950. Frankly the cards are equal to each other and the $100 premium isn't worth it on the 670. Even in the games where one beats out the other it is by a small margin, again, not really justifying the cost premium...

Now toss in the fact that you get a few free games with the 7950, even at $299, and it is a sweet deal.
