Tips on picking a HDD?

Thread Starter
hey there
currently i have sata II HDD 300gb, which is small, old, and slow
my brother wants a new HDD, so i decided to upgrade mine and then give him my old one biggrin.gif

from all these HDDs http://tntrade.sk/pc-technika-pevne-disky-hdd-3-5-sata-iii_c1790239.html
i was thinking about this one http://tntrade.sk/seagate-barracuda-7200-1tb-3-5-hdd-sata-600-ncq-aft-7200rpm-64mb-cache_d76655.html
1TB is perfect, and i dont want a HDD with that intellipower(?) thing

so, is that hdd a good pick or do you recommend any other drive?
i dont want any ssd yet, im planning to buy it later
thanks

Well,

If you're using it as your main drive then I'd go with either the Western digital black or the samsung F3. However, that being said it would be a better option for you to get a blue drive or something (since you'll use it as storage only later) and then something like a crucial 128GB M4

I personally will not buy another seagate drive

But any newer SATA drive will be faster than your old one

Avoid the "Samsung F3's" at this time.

They are no longer made by Samsung, but instead re branded Seagate drive's. It is unknown if the Seagate drive will match the Samsung drive in terms of reliability and speed.

Western Digital drive's are an great choice. Blue, green or black they are all very nice drive's in their own respect. Green's for power saving and efficentcy, Blue is more of a "universal design" or "well rounded" drive, the black's are for peak performance useage.

As someone who own's Seagate Drive's, Samsung and Western Digital I can tell you there is little to no performance/speed difference between the drive's.

If the drive is going to be a main system drive (holding OS and running programs from) WD black would be my choice. If the drive was to be paired with an SSD I would go for a blue.

EDIT: I won't spend any more money on Seagate drive's after having the last batch burn out, 4 drive total all died within a week of each other.

I was not aware of that, thanks for the info.

In which case I'd go with the WD black if I was gonig to be using it as a main system drive rather than storage. I would however point out it's over kill for a pure storage drive for when you get an SSD.

The blue's and greens are also very very good in RAID

It's the top one that you've got there, in which case yes go with the black, it's a very good drive.

Comps

P.S you can always just short stroke it and only use 25% of the drive and get peak performance 100% of the time biggrin.gif

My Seagate died as well after one month frown.gif. Personally I'd stick with the WD's. Never had a problem with any of them yet.

The Samsung F3 are true performance drives. These shots are after 3 years and 2 nearly full drives

900x900px-LL-6f56586d_f3.png

They are faster than most new WD Blacks, however as mentioned above they are no longer samsung and I'd get a WD blue/black instead of seagate/samsung now.

In my experience the only difference between a blue/black is the warranty. The 640 gig blues were as fast or faster than the blacks. And the new 1 TB blues are supposed to be performance beasts

+1 on the WD blue or Black.

You can easily use it as a data drive when/if you get an SSD. The speed never hurts.
