[MPC] Sony Ejects from Optical Disc Drive Market

Quote:
The latest sign that optical disc drives (ODDs) are increasingly viewed as obsolete technology is the fact that Sony has decided to pull out of the market completely. Intense competition and rock bottom prices led to Sony's decision to withdraw from the market, and given the rise of cloud-based services and digital distribution platforms, we wouldn't be surprised if other players stopped making ODDs, too.

....

The company's ODD operations will come to a complete halt in March of next year, at which time Sony will liquidate its ODD unit. Sony said it will offer early retirement to around 400 of the unit's employees, while others will be transferred to different positions.

I don't even have have an ODD on my PC, seems to be irrelevant since storage is relatively cheap. Also, the advent of steam pretty much retired all of my gaming disc.

Yeah. don't even have one in my PC. If I ever need one, I use my laptop and either copy the contents to a USB drive or use it over the network.

I can't remember the last time I used mine honestly, maybe for a windows 7 repair, but I can do that on a USB now.

Only real reason to get them is for watching blu-rays. I'd rather spend $10 on a blu ray as opposed to downloading a 1080p rip

Probably a good move on Sony's part; margins can't be very good on optical drives.

Same, and i've mentioned why many times - I dislike Digital Distribution. The idea of only having my games on loan so long as the distributor exists worries me. So i prefer my Hard copies, even if, sadly, the vast majority are now tied to crap like Steam.

What about blue-ray though? Huge storage space for writable blueray plus, obviously, HD movies and suchlike. I don't think optical disc drives are obsolete just yet, thankfully.

With the way things are going in ISP land I get the feeling that disk based media will become important again in the near future (unlimited plans seem to be disappearing). Right now your average game is 10-20Gb, but if all the new consoles support at least 25Gb disks the average size is going to go up. If games hit 20-50Gb on average disks may just end up being the preferred method of acquisition until ISPs catch up and data gets a lot cheaper.
Now if Sony would just remove their objections to allowing people to copying the DVD's and BluRay movies they OWN to allow the owners (ie me) to "Ripping" DVD/BluRay discs to files.

Heck, I haven't used my dvd drive in a long while and I even took the bluray player out of my laptop for an SSD.

I bought a Sata to USB adapter so I can still use it as an external drive.
