How is GW2 buttonsmashing? When I did a story quest on my mesmer, I had to constantly be on the move to avoid getting hit and use my abilities correctly. Definitely not button smashing. And there's plenty of group events and such. However, from what I've read and heard, this is mostly a PvP game. If you're not into that I can see why you wouldn't like it.
Because few abilities have big effects, it's mostly little effect, low cooldown abilities, mashing dodge/defensive abilities when you're being attacked. Sort of like comparing League of Legends to DotA, for example. Edit: Also, there's little to no punishment for dying. Instances don't reset, you just restart at the checkpoint with no progress lost and go again and again until you finish it.
There's tons of group events, but it feels (to me) like you're playing with generic NPCs as opposed to actual players.
I am entirely a PvP player, and don't really enjoy PvE at all. I dumped over 1,600 hours into GW1s PvP and was core ranger for a top 50 guild, yet only ever completed one campaign and never entered hard mode. There isn't any serious end-game PvP as far as I can tell, and even if they were to implement a GvG mode, the core skill and class system of the game prevents the kind of organization and serious play that I enjoy. It's all about your personal character rather than the team, and you can't even take on a pure support/DPS/whatever role if you wanted to because 5 of your skill slots are locked into presets, and 1 is locked as a self heal, leaving you with 3 skill slots and 1 elite to customize.Edited by Fortunex - 8/29/12 at 3:46pm
