A very small fee to repair gear when there isn't (as far as I can tell) a good money dump in the game is negligible.

You seem to make some good points though, but punishment for death is imo an old outdated mechanic. It just makes the game more frustrating and de-motivating.

I'm only level 32, but it feels almost exactly the same as it did when I was level 5, I just have a couple more skills to choose from. It isn't any more difficult, if anything it's easier. But when level cap is 80, level 30 is still early game I guess.

Punishment for death gives you a reason to try, and a challenge. My friend was doing an instance, and died 7-8 times, but just kept reviving and completing a little bit more of the instance each time until she finished it. That isn't challenging, that's just grinding.

There's tons of group events, but it feels (to me) like you're playing with generic NPCs as opposed to actual players.
I am entirely a PvP player, and don't really enjoy PvE at all. I dumped over 1,600 hours into GW1s PvP and was core ranger for a top 50 guild, yet only ever completed one campaign and never entered hard mode. There isn't any serious end-game PvP as far as I can tell, and even if they were to implement a GvG mode, the core skill and class system of the game prevents the kind of organization and serious play that I enjoy. It's all about your personal character rather than the team, and you can't even take on a pure support/DPS/whatever role if you wanted to because 5 of your skill slots are locked into presets, and 1 is locked as a self heal, leaving you with 3 skill slots and 1 elite to customize.

I disagree with you there, you can have 2 sets of weapons/skills(they are tied in), also I prefer this way since It forces me to think strategically about my 2 sets and how I'm gonna use them, its not like in WoW or SWTOR where you have dozens of skills allot of those that either do similar things or just plain useless, GW2 isn't about gear or having many skills for you to push, its about player skill, I would even say that GW2 is closer to MLG then to your typical RPGMMO in that aspect, since the player skill is what determines victory not op gear and bad class balance, off course its still not in that range, but its in the right direction.

I didn't say anything about relying on gear or having tons of skills. Some customization ability would be nice though, so I can specialize in DPS or support in ways other than traits. Instead, I'm stuck playing my character with 60% of my skill bar locked down, and not one of my 7-8 weapon sets gives me exactly what I want, as a thief.

I'm kind of the opposite of your description, the guild I'm in held the speedclear records in UW/FoW/DoA on several occasions during its prime, while the only PvP played was the occasional AB. I definitely agree on that its very hard to get organized in GW2 compared to GW or any other MMO. I'm still enjoying GW2 though, not as a replacement or successor, but as a different game.

Yeah you really have no clue and seem only to have checked out WvW as far as PvP is concerned. As for the lack of customization, there's enough skills for each class to make tens of thousands of different combinations, most of which are played very differently from one another. There's also the traits you gain and the fact you have to choose special bonuses every 10 traits you drop in a line, so yeah there's a lot of customization, and you CAN take on a pure support/dps/spiker role if you want to, you just gotta figure out the right combination of skills and traits to do it. There's also quite a lot of gearing customization available and the impact it has on your character should not be taken lightly.

Nah, I've played mostly arenas. WvW feels even more facemash than the rest of the game sadsmiley.gif

There's 30-40 utility skills per class (many of which do similar things, at least in the thief and guardian trees), 4-8 healing skills, and 10-15 elites.

You can take on the role, but you can't optimize for it because there are almost always wasteful skills in your weapon tree. For example, I want ranged single-target DPS, so as a thief I'm stuck going pistols. With pistols, I have 5 skills, 3 of which I don't use, 1 of which is an autoattack, leaving 1 skill that I actually use. The rest of my bar is locked down to heals and utility skills, with only a couple options for damage, much of which is poisons, not direct damage, so now to make efficient use of those skills, I have to get gear with +condition damage (or get defensive abilities instead, also reducing my damage potential).

Now for contrast, in GW1, if I didn't want those 3 skills that I didn't use, I could pull them out and replace them with skills that suit the role I want to play, and customize my gear to suit that.

Hmm

Something tells me you would like an Elementalist or Engineer. As an Ele I actively had to use almost nearly ALL my abilities across atleast 2-3 attunements to be effective in PvP, it was a nightmare keeping track of all the key sequences and cooldowns.

I'm still learning the basics of an engineer though, need to reach the stage where I get the toolbelt + some kits.

Well I still say that this game pvp wise will definately be more faceroll than WoW ever was or could be due to the sheer pace at which you can spam abilities. People keep saying skill but really its more of who has the OP weapon and can spam abilities faster. Most moves effect's don't last long enough to really be able to make it game changing. But I guess we'll have to see how it all unfolds.

Level 80 with 82% map completion already. I have no life, and I didn't rush... I just need sleep.

It's pretty depressing though because anything above level 40 has very few players, earlier zones are packed.
