New system build, first time watercooling.

Thread Starter
I'm looking to replace my sig rig and the key players of the new build are as follows:

i5 3570k
ASUS P8Z77-V PRO
GIGABYTE GTX 670 2GB
NZXT SWITCH 810 Gun-Metal
PC Power and Cooling Silencer Mk II 750W

I am looking to water cool the CPU and GPU. My aims are to keep the system on the quiet side and total cost reasonable, good bang for the buck vs absolute budget. I want to cool the C. I was looking at starting with one of the XSPC kits like this one for example. I was debating between the RX and the EX and leaning toward the RX even if I end up not having room for push/pull. Is there anything else I should be considering?

I picked up the cheaper kit a few weeks ago, and they are pretty good. From a beginner standpoint, I would recommend it. I'm sure the advanced watercoolers will come by and tell you to build your own though. Are you only planning on cooling your CPU? Upgrading it in the future?

If you are doing both the CPU and GPU, that RX 360 will work perfectly. The only issue you run into is that you'll probably be short on tubing. Order some extra tubing, or completely separate tubing even. I'd go with 8 feet if I were you; 10 if you plan on routing things a pretty decent distance. Better safe than sorry.

For both the Ivy Bridge and 670, don't do any less than a thick 360, especially if you plan on overclocking. The point of watercooling is to have lower temperatures than air, and if you venture into a 240, you won't be doing well on load temps. You COULD get by with an RS360 (slim) if you had to, but all in all I'd recommend the RX series. If you really want to go crazy, you could order an RX240 or RS240 separately and but that in the bottom of your case along with the RX360 biggrin.gif

I will be looking to do GPU as well and there's a chance of going SLI in six months or so. I was thinking it might be better to take small steps and work up from there. I'm glad to know I'm heading in the right direction.

If you add a second 670, adding the RS240 wouldn't be a bad idea in the bottom of the case, but that can wait to be honest.

Excellent case choice, you won't be disappointed, but why a 3570K instead of a 2500K? Ivy Bridge chips don't overclock quite as well as Sandy Bridges.

Well he never mentioned that we was going to overclock, I guess that's a pretty good question to ask haha.

OP, do you plan on overclocking either the CPU or GPU?

@Mr357 I'm planning on getting into overclocking this build but it's my first foray into OC and not looking to go too crazy with the speed. I also wanted to take advantage of native USB3 and PCI-E3 as well. I looked at a few cases and this one caught my eye and noticed a lot of water cooling builds with it.

@WebsterXC I figured I'd probably want to add 2nd rad and was thinking of the RX240 when I get the 2nd 670. If I understand right I'd also need a bridge as well and would want to make sure my pump is still up to the task. I'll be doing a lot of research when I get closer to going SLI.....for now I'm just trying to get my feet wet....pardon the pun.

Almost any pump will work, you're setup isn't highly restricting or excessively large. I highly highly recommend the 655 series (also knows as the Laing D5). Both Swiftech and Alphacool make one, I'm running the Alphacool as I'm typing this. Love it! Actually a fair majority of people combine their res and pump here. I'm running the RES-232 with the Alphacool pump and I love it.

However, depending on what you want the build to look like, an MCP 355 or Danger Den CPX-Pro would work. As for the radiator, an RX is thicker than RS, make sure it'll fit in the bottom of the Switch 810. I think you're smart and waiting on the second radiator and card, you never know what financial things you may run in to in the near future. Best to wait and see how one 670 and one RX360 fairs.

Watercooling is a fun boat to be in (HA HA I'M HILARIOUS). Any other questions, let us know. Everyone here on Overclock is extremely helpful, especially if you do your research beforehand. thumb.gif

I was looking at this kitBlock and adding a GPU to the mix. Now I'm thinking of getting this kit as it has a better pump and compression fittings then picking up the GPU block when I expand. I'm leaning toward the 2nd kit even though it's a bit more. It's got a better pump from what I can tell and I can pick the size of the compression fittings. I was leaning toward 1/2 ID and 3/4 OD. I was also thinking of the Lamptron 30W - 4 Channel to keep the noise down. Any strong opinions either way or other sagely advise someone might want to add?
