Pentium 4 "Extreme" OC'ing

Thread Starter
So, a few friends and I had the idea of buying a bunch of dirt cheap Cedar Mills and pushing them to their limits. We bought 5 641's for about $3 each off Ebay. I just ordered a G41 board and some cheap Patriot RAM and hopefully this weekend we'll be executing our little project. My question to OCN, is what unorthodox cooling methods should we try? I'm open to anything regardless of whether or not it's silly, just so long as it's not expensive (ie. liguid nitrogen). Yes, I will record it and possibly post it here.

If there was actually a socket we could fit it in we would glue 4 of the Cedar Mills together an call it an i7 XD

Cheaper sub zero alternatives would be a chiller, like with an old air conditioner, stick the evap into a picnic cooler full of antifreeze & use it with a waterblock on the cpu.
A slush box gets colder, same idea but a container full of acetone with dry ice in it.
Either buy a cheap pot, or make a pot (copper tube of some kind with a base brazed on, a real pot with weight to it is better but more $) & use dry ice.

Less extreme would be a bong cooler, they can get sub-ambient temps. Those older chips like cold though, the colder the better for higher overclocks.

Get a block of dry ice and just sit it on top of the CPU, see what happens.

It was the only 775 board I could find from any trusted retailer. The whole point of this is for fun anyways, not to set records.

I have been wanting to do this, but I can't bare to destroy my beloved FX51 :'(

I do have a P4 2.8 that I wouldn't mind sticking into a snowbank, but I only have a Dell proprietary board for it.

I would say that a water block, a pump, and 3 48gal coolers filled with dry ice setup in parallel might actually allow you to hit a high clock speed for an extended period of time, as it will not warm as quickly. Use them to cool the board and the RAM too (just get a piece of copper tubing and flatten one side then permanently attach it to the VRMs/MOSFET). I would be interested in seeing how high you can get DDR RAM to clock.

Or you could stick the entire board into an old refrigerator, with the keyboard and monitor outside, and fill the bottom 4ft with dry ice lol.

This I might try. I've got a mini-fridge lying around and I guess dry ice isn't very expensive.

So far I've been thinking more along the lines of stuff like putting thermal paste on the bottom of a metal bowl and filling it with water for ghetto liquid cooling, or setting a blow dryer to cold air and putting right next to the CPU itself. Again guys, this is just for ****s and giggles and I honestly don't expect the hardware to survive.
