Scrambling for Laptop

Thread Starter
Engineering Major and I'm desperately looking for a fitting laptop with the last week I have before term starts.

Budget: ~$1000 but possibly lower considering I just lost access to some funds.
Not expecting it to run Crysis maxed out, but fine for anything else mainstream.

The biggest points I'm looking at are:
  • Fast access (i.e. SSD is very much preferred)
  • Battery life
  • Need it within a week
Could do with nice performance and decent design as well.

I'm hoping somebody can help me find something.

- Was looking at these two a bit:

(^ this one feels ugly though)

A used m14x, replace with SSD if it doesn't already have a hybrid drive. Search the FS forums.

I suggest the following.

Get a Lenovo T or W series. 15 inch screen. Get a HDD caddy. Put an SSD in the main drive and the HDD in the hdd caddy. Get one with the nvidia chipset. I have seen some used T520's with SSD's and fully spec'ed out go for $1000 used. I used a 17 inch ASUS M70 for when I was studying Engineering. Too big of a screen. 15 is perfect.

Kind of pushing my budget but considered.

I decided battery life doesn't matter so much actually, because its university, and I'm always going to be next to a power socket.
And it's 15 minutes from my house, so it really, really doesn't matter. blinksmiley.gif

Yes I think replacing the pre-installed HDD with an SSD would be the best option.
So basically strike two of those main points.

Performance, performance becomes priority then...
Additionally, I prefer black, sleeker designs.

Lenovo Y580 - Ivy i7, 8GB RAM, 2GB GTX 660M, 1366x768 15.6" screen, etc. It has a mSATA slot for a SSD in addition to the 750GB drive. biggrin.gif

The laptop costs around $850 off newegg and the SSDs you can get cost around $110 for a 128GB model.

So far it's the best deal for a gamer on the go. biggrin.gif

Y580 is ~$1100 on Newegg, way over budget
And the $850 version is 6GB mem. @_@

I was looking at this recently cause it's on great sale (second week in a row, raised suspicions)

6GB memory is plenty for what you want. You can get that plus the mSATA SSD for under a grand and be good. Trust me on that.

EDIT: And why would you want to go for the previous generation laptop anyway? The GPU is terrible in terms of power. The GT 555M that Lenovo employs has 96 shaders, and 1GB of GDDR5 on a 128-bit bus.

The 660M roughly equals a 570M, which decimates the 555M in every way imaginable.

I fear the single channel bottleneck though (yes I know it's still better than dual 2x2GB).

To buy the y580 I would pricematch this to PC Canada or something. But are there any differences between that and Newegg's version other than the RAM and a 64GB SSD?

I also can't tell if the cheaper version has an open mSATA slot or not.

I can PM to this then, $15 more, no biggy.

I'm looking for the cheapest SSD I can find, and I was thinking something like this Agility 3, because I'm planning on buying this tomorrow, before school starts....
Or maybe something else?

I do feel like the 580 will be a decent choice. Except, are you sure it does have an extra drive?
I don't see any details whatsoever about it.

Wait, mSATA SSD? I can't even get them at NCIX.
Replacing the main HDD with an SSD would be just bad wouldn't it?

Guess I could ship from Newegg...

Looks like the best option, no?
