Scrambling for Laptop - Page 2

You don't need msata if you are replacing the main hdd with an ssd. Also, why is it 'bad'? Its not, I've done this on my computer and it works great. I just removed my optical drive and threw the hdd that the laptop came with in a optical bay caddy and threw it in there. best of both worlds - dvd drive. Honestly it depends on whether u use the optical drive though.

I meant "bad" if I kept just the SSD in there with no permanent HDD to support it. That would be terrible for the SSD.
Yeah I just found out today that I could do the whole optical drive thing. I don't usually have much use for DVDs.

But I have no idea what to search up to find a optical HDD caddy for laptops. I can't find them at all...
I think I found them, but it's like $30. Would be more expensive than v v v that option.

The Mushkin would be kind of less of a hassle, and it's pretty decent no? Speeds are theoretically faster than my own Crucial M4.

Basically, if I want to keep all my goodies,

1. I could get another Crucial M4 for $99 by price match,
Optical HDD adapter for $30 + 10 shipping
External DVD caddy for like $25
Total: $165 + tax
Cons: Shipping wait time for the HDD adapter anyways, plus the hassle of replacing everything.

OR
2. http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226320
Total: $156.78 (shipping and tax included)
No hassle, only shipping time.

These two options don't differ THAT much,
but I guess it comes down to how good actually is the Mushkin?
Newegg reviews just call it awesome but by speeds I'm not so sure, especially in such a tiny form factor.

Well, I just found out that mSATA would void any warranty on a laptop.
Only switching out the optical drive will let me get an SSD and keep the warranty. (is this correct?)

The Y580 is sold out and it's hard to tell when it'll be restocked, so I was thinking more MSI GE60 after boosting up budget.

Does anyone know if something like this caddy will fit and allow me to stick in the original 750GB HDD?

... Well that would be just beautifully perfect for me.
Too bad it's not going to come out anywhere near soon enough. frown.gif

Anyone have any experience with MSI laptops and optical bay caddies though?
