To any gamers on the fence about 120hz vs IPS - 120HZ!

Thread Starter
Hey guys.

So I've been on the fence forever, do I want bigger res or 120hz? I had no idea. I sold my eyefinity setup last night (I had been using one Acer H243H and 2 x Asus VE246s), and with it bought a Samsung S27A950D.

My god. Games feel amazing, even the desktop amazed me. I played a few rounds of CS:GO, the best way I could explain it is having 0 ping compared to like 100. everything is so fluid, it makes your mouse and keyboard feel a LOT faster.
My main worry was pixel density. 1920x1080 on 27" sounded yuck, I sit about 2-3 feet away from my screen (big desk) and I can honestly say it is really not an issue. People say text is blurry, but I have terrible eyes and text is fine. In fact I actually don't have to lean in to see text anymore. wink.gif

TL:DR If you can't decide 120hz vs IPS - go 120hz.

Interesting story, and certainly worth taking into account.
However, since you haven't tried out an IPS-panel monitor yet, it's really not fair to make a comparison.
Aside from that, wether you're better of going for IPS or 120hz depends on a ton of different factors, such as the types of games you play and wether your hardware is actually good enough to get much benefit out of the 120hz (you won't notice any difference if you're running games at around 60fps anyway, for example).

In the end though, I'm glad to hear you're enjoying your 120hz monitor!

I use both an IPS and a 120hz Every day, and it honestly depends on the application.

Although the ghosting on almost any IPS is too significant for me to really consider it an option for gaming, and as mentioned.. 120hz in gaming is just too smooth to resist.

There is currently no IPS panels capable of 120hz refresh rates; natively....

I would not bother getting 120Hz for 30mins of BF3 lol. Even then its just feels smother compare to 60Hz but that does not make 60Hz laggy.

It does if you're using V-Sync (V-Sync causes twice the lag at 60Hz as it does at 120Hz).
