7970 screen(s) black out, possible displayport issue

Thread Starter
I have a VisionTek 7970 Reference that I put into my system, previously had an ASUS EAH 4870 in the setup.

I have an issue with my setup showing blank/black screens (similar to a resolution change or hardware disconnect where the signal is temporarily lost it seems).

I have the card set at stock for everything.

Whenever I have a monitor hooked up via a displayport active adapter (not usb powered) and have other monitors hooked up via straight DVI or HDMI, my entire desktop blacks out temporarily while sometimes hearing the hardware disconnected sound. A moment later, the screens come back on and a moment later the cycle will repeat. Some times I can hear the game continuing, others not.

I haven't had any issues that I've noticed when merely being on the desktop, mainly only when trying to run a game.

I've left out the displayport adapter and used only DVI and HDMI, no issues whatsoever. I have even tested just using the displayport to DVI only and it seemed to work fine though I didn't give a test longer than 5 min, (it usually happens as soon as the game renders graphics).

Last night I also tried out all three monitors again, after my second reformat and reinstall (updated all windows updates, installed the 12.7b drivers) and had the game running what seemed to be stable, though had the issue a few times getting to the rendered graphics. Whenever I hit the menu the some assets would jump all over the screen, though I couldn't get the blank screens to occur.

I've checked the temp of the GPU as well as the clock speeds, everything seems to be within expected ranges for the clock speeds and temperatures, though when I get the blank screen issues, the clock speeds jump down to the base idle speed (300MHz core, 150MHz memory) then jump back to normal when the picture returns, even when using multiple monitors which should be 500MHz core idle and 1350MHz memory when using multiple monitors if I remember correctly.

I've reformatted twice, tried the 12.4, 12.6, 12.8, and 12.7b drivers.

Tried MSI Afterburner and the -xcl trick (though not 100% sure I did it 100% correct), set a 2D profile of stock at the time (925MHz and 1350MHz), and a 3D profile of 1000MHz and 1500MHz.

I've tried 3 displayport active adapters:

1 x http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004071ZXA/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00
2 x http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004SUELLC/ref=oh_details_o04_s00_i00

All 3 had the problem occur.

I have an HDMI to DVI adapter coming in the mail to convert the HDMI output as well just in case.

I am at a loss for what the issue might be if it is not a bad card, and the card runs perfectly fine in dual monitor with DVI and HDMI. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

Specs are:
3x Asus VH236H monitors (ran displayport active adapter to dvi)
ASUS P7P55D PRO LGA 1156 Intel P55 ATX Intel Motherboard
OCZ Fatal1ty OCZ700FTY 700W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply

Western Digital Caviar Blue WD6400AAKS 640GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive [Used as Boot Drive]
ASUS 24X DVD Burner - Bulk 24X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 12X DVD+R DL 24X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM Black SATA Model DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS - OEM
ASUS Black 4X BD-ROM 8X DVD-ROM 32X CD-ROM SATA Internal Blu-ray Drive Model BR-04B2T - OEM

Previous video card in setup was:
ASUS EAH4870/2DI/1GD5 Radeon HD 4870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card

TL;DR

Blank/Black screens occur during gaming only with displayport adapter attached, no problems single/dual screen without displayport adapter. Tried multiple displayport adapters (all active) with various cables and monitors. Reformatted and reinstalled 2 times so far, tried 12.4, 12.6, 12.8, and 12.7b drivers. Have gotten a single screen via displayport to dvi to work for my short test (5 min) as well. Problem usually occurs within seconds of graphics being rendered or game being launched.

Did you ever figure this out man? I have similar issues where I get no screen for my Display Port screens, via my active DVI (f) > DP (m) adapters.
This only happens with high resolutions though..I can get video if I am at 1280 X 720 or something.
And straight DVI and HDMI on my video card both work fine.
This happened suddenly after I had just installed Windows 8.1, strangely enough--I was just navigating around in Windows Explorer and then suddenly my screens both went blank.

I'm having the exact same issue with a 7990 right now (with latest AMD drivers too). Did you find the cause? Or solution?

See this thread:
Eyefinity not working on 7990

and this one for single display with just DP->DVI
