Game Performance - Windows 7 or WIndows 8? - Page 2

Most people who are saying they notice that Windows 8 is noticeably faster are most likely using an old install of Windows 7 as the benchmark and a fresh (obviously) install of Windows 8 and aren't really comparing apples to apples.
Now, having said that, I have no doubt that in 6-9 months, as drivers mature and SP1 for Windows 8 rolls around, there might be a slight (say 5-10%) performance increase under Windows 8. But that is a "maybe" and isn't now.

When I tried the dev and consumer previews, win 8 was very light weight. I was ~500MB of RAM when idle.. my win 7 with a clean install can't do that. It will be a great OS for slow hardware. But if you are comparing high end rigs, win 7 and win 8 will not have a noticeable difference.

Another very valid point.

I only tested Windows 8 on a 12GB 64-bit system, an 8GB 64-bit system, and a 3GB 32-bit system. They all pretty much felt about the same (I benchmarked on the 8GB system as that was a totally fresh install for both 7 and 8). I haven't bothered trying to mess with Windows 8 on an older rig with only 1 or 2GB of RAM. My thought being, stick with the OS that is approximate to your hardware.

heres some food for thought... .i'd stick with you're windows7 rig for now... i upgraded to windows 8 64bit enterprise and i'm having low performance issues...i'm convinced its a windows 8/driver/config issue. i've spent hours reading posts and there are many others our there having the same issues. i have an fx-8120 OC'd to 4.579, 8gigs running at 1866, and a 7970 OC'd to 1125gpu and 1545mem. 240gig SSD... i'm running 3 monitors with 5760X1080. some maps i'm getting only 20fps and then it will spike to 100+. i can place all the settings on low and run in windowd mode and get the same FPS. with no overclocking at all i only loose around 5% performance hit in games.

what drives me crazy is that when i first loaded everything my games ran great. i have heaven benchmark results with scores in the 2200's and now the benchmarks wont budge past 1700.. its like MSFT realeased an update and now my rig just runs slower.. GPU wont even get past 60c!

I have another ssd with windows 7 that i swap out and i'm averaging 60+ fps in all games with all settings on Ultra. Larger maps can dip into the 40's but they play-ability isnt effected.

i've clean installed drivers, 10 different times.

I'd love someone to post a solution to this issue.... and yes... my computer is plunged in smile.gif
