Gigabyte 2xWindforce 7950 Crossfired +Bios Flashed to 7970

Got a Yamaski Catleap and my old graphics cards weren't cutting it so I ordered two Gigabyte 7950s and flashed the non-GE 7970 bios on them (cba clocking them through afterburner)

I am pretty impressed cause these cards are monsters! @650$ total cost they are darn good priced too!

Some benchs:

I have a Gigabyte 7950, and I'm about to flash the bios on it, too. I was just going to mod the existing bios, using the 1100MHz@1131mV core voltage I've settled on as stable and cool (61 degrees max at full-load).

I'm not sure if you're saying you flashed your 7950 using a 7970 bios and you've unlocked extra shaders, or if you're just saying you've got 7970 clock/memory speeds now. Which one? Also, which tools did you use to flash the bios and which switch setting did you have your card set to when you flashed it?

Thanks!

I flashed the gigabyte 7970 non-GE bios through dos using the ATIflash.

I didn't unlock anything but it received the 7970s voltages and clocks (Can't be arsed to do it every time through afterburner).

Also which switch? the n2.

A couple of more benchies:

Nice numbers coming off your rig!

Thanks for the info. Going to flash the card once I've settled on the top memory clock for my card. Haven't really had time to push memory yet. I'll reply with my best results once I find what they are.

OK, so you didn't modify your bios, you simply downloaded a 7970 non-GE version and flashed your card with it. I was beginning to wonder, since RBE doesn't seem to allow me to load my own bios from the Gigabyte card, nor any other copy of the Gigabyte 7950 bios I can find. It give me a "Invalid file specified. Not an ATI BIOS? - Debug information: 'CheckValid' reported error." message.

Man, I'd pay a few bucks to the author of ATI RBE to update it to work with the Southern Islands cards. My Gigabyte will run comfortably at 1100MHz, but I have to use damned MSI Afterburner to get it to run at that speed. I'd like to just boot up and have it run at 1100MHz.

By the way, which 7970 non-GE bios did you use?

OK, so I downloaded the ATI Flash tool here:

http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/2099/ATIFlash-3.95.html

and I downloaded a Gigabyte 7970 bios from here:

http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/index.php?page=1&architecture=ATI&manufacturer=Gigabyte&model=HD+7970&interface=&memSize=3072

I grabbed the newest one dated 2012-03-08, and set for a core/mem of 1000/1375. I made a flash boot key, and used this command to flash the bios:

atiflash -p -fs -fp 0 7970.rom

The "0" is the card, and 7970.rom is what I renamed the new bios. My computer booted up, and must have detected a different (probably a 7970) card. I got 1 bluescreen, but when I rebooted, my Windows 7 x64 came up and I've just put the card through a few hours of Diablo 3, and it's completely solid! Only issue is that my 3rd monitor on the HDMI port isn't working. I read somebody else having a problem with their HDMI port on their 7950 not working any more after flashing to a 7970 bios. I'm just going to get another DVI --> mini-display port adapter like the one I've already got on the 2nd monitor, and I'll be good to go. And no more having to use software to clock my card up to 1GHz! Although it will clock higher than that, I'm going to use this bios until somebody comes up with a way to modify the existing 7950 bios to a customized clock speed.

Thanks for starting this thread!

No worries. I'm just about to grab another Accell DVI --> mini display port adapter, like this:

http://www.pricebat.ca/b087b-006b-accell-mini-display-port-to-dvi-single-link/

Works great with monitor 2. I'm just glad that I've got a 1GHz 7950 running like a swiss watch and no MSI Afterburner to load up.
