I looked through and found I could get both at my budget...? Is this a good deal?

Well, you're locked into the dead socket (fm1), so the 3870k is the best you can ever use with that board. The iGPU is also useless with the 6870, so unless the board/apu are a killer deal, theres definitely better value out there.

If you're at the level of a 6870, theres better cpu/socket choices out there that wont waste resources/budget.

EDIT: 6870 ( i wrote 6850)

How about a board/cpu budget and we can throw some suggestions at you?

I've got 230 bucks. I currently have a A6-3500 and a HD 6670. Looking to upgrade both or one.

You could grab a graphics-less Athlon II 641 and use it with the 6870.  The CPU-only part has a good ability to overclock provided you have a good board and RAM flexibility.

EDIT: The A8 3850 would cost the same as that so might as well....

If your doing an upgrade them that's a good path to go. Both the A8-3870K and HD6870 are generally good value buys. If you were building a new system then Yeroon's point would be valid but with this new information your route seems fine. Unless you want to change out the motherboard there's not really any better you can do.

I have a ASRock A75M-HVS MATX Mobo.
How about the Athlon x$ 641 & a OC'd GTx 460 @ 925MHz
post #7 of 12
If you have that board, might as well go with the 3870k and keep the 6670 for crossfire

I kind of forgot about that chip. At Newegg it's kind of irrelevant since it's the same price as the A8-3850 right now (as stated in your edit). At a different store with a lower price it can be a real bargain. Direction has the Athlon II X4 641 right now for $68.99 shipped (after code SUPER50 for $1 off). That's a pretty good buy. Probably the biggest negative of the chip is that it will be hard to resell since the FM1 platform is a lot about the impressive onboard graphics. The choice is yours, LightMassKiller. Is the HD6550D, 200MHz, unlocked multiplier worth the extra money for the A8-3870K.

That would work too but only if the GTX460 is cheaper than the HD6870. The GTX460 1GB 336SP version is about the same speed as a HD6850.

1. Is Directron reliable?
2. The HD 6670 is artifacting a lot.
3, I'd rather utilize PhysX off the GPU instead of The CPU. Lags like heck in Mirror's Edge.
