[Build Log] Code name: FreeNASty (Subject to change)

*Suggestions are welcomed, this is my first server*

Purpose: Home server that holds my files, can be remotely accessed (SSH), can stream media through the house and remotely, Windows backups.

That's really all the server stuff I have at the moment. So here's some skin pictures of some KB pron. From the left going down KBC Pokers w/ Reds, Browns, then Blues. On the right Data911 w/ Blacks. I hate mx-black keys.


kdon: FreeNAS is looking like the most user friendly OS right now. I'll venture out into the xmxsxswhatever when I get time to play around more.

They (microcenter) ran out of 620s so I grabbed a 630 instead. Oh well. I got the PERC 5/i and I realized I know absolutely nothing about this piece of hardware. My passthrough cables are the right kind, but which (white/or black) connector do I put them on? Pics to follow.




The metal tray on the 5/i does not allow for it to be mounted on the motherboard so I guess I will have to remove it.

I assume you are talking about these cables?


I've got some generic plates left over from a video card experiment that might work. I was planning on having a 120mm run on the perc 5/i.

I would have never figured nail polish in the budget of this build. Waiting on the two 1 TB hard drives and we should be in business.

The case has come along nicely. I spent about 5 hours drinking and building this case. I didn't get the job I was shooting for today, so the case got the brunt of it.

Here is the baseboard for the mobo and PSU:

I had a lot of trouble deciding how and where I wanted the PSU. I came to the conclusion to have it draw air from the bottom. The problem is there is a 1/2 inch gap (12.7mm to you people across the pond and elsewhere) where the exhaust comes out and the air comes in.

Hmmm, there needs to be a higher level of thinking? Ice down the beer.

Problem solved, problem staying solved. Cut some screws with the same thread and beast on variables. I make contingency plans for a living son.

Too big screws are too big. When ever I use a dremel tool I make sure that I have the proper safety measures rolling:
-Eye Pro
-Ear Pro (loud Texas Country music loud enough to drown out harmful decibel levels)
-Steady buzzed hands
-A hammer in case things get to rough and I have to take my own life

Alright, time for some brass stand-offs. I know wood doesn't like electricity, but I'm a cautious fellow.

As I drink more I realize that circles become so much easier to cut. I didn't have a compass so I nail/string/penciled it. Thanks Jesuit High School Geometry teacher for not letting me fail my test when I forgot a compass. Cheers Mr. Perry.

I not only did it once, but twice. I guess it's a good idea to have intake AND exhaust.

Sobriety is slipping. Right angles and straight lines are becoming harder.

8 beers in and I prevailed with a file and some sand paper.


That's the update. I might work a bit more on it tonight. We'll see.
