I will give you $300 is nothing once you get started but it really depends on how much you want to get into it

I agree with you in this aspect! if we want people to continually gain interest in benching we cannot set a high price to get into the hobby with subzero cooling! I started with a $80 pot, then moved to a koolance v2 which I still use, and now into phase change! If I had to pay $300 before I could begin, I would never had made the effort!

I also have to agree, I don't think that most people start with a $300 LN2 pot. I know myself I did the same starting with a Koolance all aluminum pot because, like a lot of people, I started with DICE. I think the quality and size and thermal properties of the pot are less of a factor than with LN2, so getting a nice cheap pot that you can throw some acetone and DICE in and get going, learning to insulate, and the in and outs of subzero and blowing up your first hardware. Then the investment isn't so great if you lose interest in a month of so, or, more likely, you end up hooked and then your looking for phase cooling and dewars and cheap Fluke electronics.

I'm interested..I'm a novice in the sub-zero world..have an LN2-V2(practically donated by NoG)..wish it was deeper/wider.

With a 200$ shipped pot you have to go aluminum . Only for a good pot base you have to use a lot of cooper . Honestly i would not consider to design any new pot . They are out there guys who are selling good pots for under 300$ full cooper pots. You don't have to buy Kingpin F1 , Piotres and Ryba and few other guys are doing good pots. I have a 3Kg solid cooper Piotres and is really good. I bought it for under 300$ shipped from Poland .

actually you dont have to go full aluminum the only reason a pot should cost 250-300 is if its solid copper it is possible to do the Koolance v2 was a copper aluminum mix and performed really well for its selling price of $175 or so its just not made any more

also with all the pots costing basically the same shipped I mght as well go for a kingpin pot if im shelling out almost $300

For those of you whom look at the price of copper and get discouraged due to the prices all you have to do is think outside the box.

If you are not afraid of getting dirty and doing work go to a junkyard/ Pick-n-Pull/scrapyard etc. and rip the wiring harness out of a car/truck (from bumper to bumper). As an example there is 25lbs-30lbs of copper in the wiring harness of a mid 80's Ford Ranger.. Newer conventional cars have roughly 45lbs-55lbs of copper in their wiring harness's. But in order to get the car harness cheap You need to remove it yourself. It will cost you a little and It's alot of work to remove the whole wiring harness but it will save you ALOT of money and leave you with ALOT of copper that You can sell (Make money on) or make other pots or whatever you want.

Take all the wire and put it in a big pile and or burning barrel and and let it burn (burning removes the plastic/rubber coatings from the copper) when thats done make square die or what ever shape for example out of wood/ Steel etc.. and melt the copper into your die. You get the idea and take it from there.

I've been doing this for years not only for copper but for lead (off of wheel weights etc.) that I use for adding or moving weight around various racing vehicles.

Paying that much money for a dice/nitrogen pot is insane... though I do understand that many of you can't make them yourself and so spending the money is your only option really.

One thing I will say is I could make a aluminium pot that costs over $500 easy thumb.gif The only way to make it cheap is to not do much machining or simple stuff like drill holes the material is not really the big cost tongue.gif. Make pots in China machine cost low make them in UK or USA the problem is we like to be paid biggrin.gif. I agree with K404 once you get serious about LN2 you will need a good pot as the benefits are endless. I also feel there should be a cheap starter pot but it would lose it's appeal very quickly where LN2 is concerned although would be fine for starting with dice. thumb.gif

@racer86 I would be interested in some of the quotes you get for your idea if you would allow me to see smile.gif. What country will you be getting quotes from?

I agree that once you start getting heavy into LN2 a nice pot is a plus but like you said some sort of starter pot is needed. Im trying to shoot for great dice performance and acceptable/good LN2 performance. Once I get a working ES that I like im going to try and see if I can get someone to test it against their markman and kinpin pots.

If you cut corners to cut costs, it might put you (or a buyer) off benching.... I think some people don't quite get that. Sure, a piece of metal can be cheap, but it will completely change how an OC session feels and how much fun you get out of it. It will also affect how long your dice or LN2 lasts. A good pot will pay for itself in LN2 saved compared to a bad one. There is NO exaggeration there.
You don't buy a pot, you INVEST in one
smile.gif
I appreciate that a $300 outlay is a lot to ask, but buying a good pot from the start, means that it's possible that you'll NEVER need to buy another. Pot design has come SO FAR in the last 10 years and realistically, there's a limit to how much more heat/power consumption a CPU can produce in the future.
Heh....$300 becomes absolutely nothing once someone is addicted to cold. Seriously tongue.gif
But.... design something anyway! Try something smile.gif Even if it takes a few prototypes, the feeling of satisfaction will be worth it

Agree with K404 completely, people need to understand that they are getting into a very expensive hobby, a pot is not one of the things you want to cut corners with, it makes or breaks benching sessions. If you put your money away and do things right the first time by buying good gear then you should have an awesome time. A pot isn't something that needs to really be upgraded, I have an F1 EE (and I know how bad pots feel, I've tested a couple of them, not fun) and I don't see a future in which I will not bench with it. I may buy other pots for fun, but it won't be out of necessity.

That said, I look forward to seeing your design. I don't think a cheap at all costs approach is a good one, but it should be interesting none the less. thumb.gif
