Crossfire questions

Thread Starter
Hey I'm going to be going to dual led monitors and play alot of shooters. Currently have a HD 6870 double d and an fx4100 pcu on a 750 w power supply. I'm looking into going crossfire but I can't find much info on it. Like do I have to pair it with the same card. Would I be better off going to a higher end card and crossfire that. Or just screw it all and go to nvidia and sli. Info and opinions greatly appreciated need any more info on my pc ask. Thank-you

You need to pair it with the same card (ideal), or another card in the same family. For example: 7870+7870 or 7870+7850.

As for my opinion, CrossFire is awesome. wink.gif
post #3 of 14

You can only crossfire within the same series (e.g. 68xx with 68xx). So you could do 6870 and 6850 (not recommended because it will perform as though you are running 2 6850s in Crossfire) or two 6870s which would be optimal. However if you are running two monitors (let's say 1920x1080 each) 1GB of VRAM is going to bottleneck you in pretty much all games. There is nothing wrong with AMD cards and no need to go Nvidia, you should probably look into something like a 2GB or 3GB VRAM card though when pushing higher resolutions. The higher the resolution, the more VRAM is required especially when you start turning graphics options up higher and especially with increasing AA.

OP sell the HD 6870, get a HD 7950 OC and overclock it. prices are awesome and a HD 7950 (1.1 Ghz) is faster than HD 6870 CF.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Sapphire/HD_7950_Flex/31.html
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Powercolor/HD_7850_PCS_Plus/9.html

BF3 1920 X 1200 4x AA

HD 6870 - 31.4
HD 7950 (1025) - 69.7

Get the Sapphire HD 7950 Vapor-X . comes with 950 Mhz boost. custom HD 7970 PCB, 8 phase power design, excellent vapor-x cooler. a single high end card will always provide you the best experience. Multi GPU issues like micro stuttering or CF profile availability can be avoided.
Also overclock your CPU to 4.2 - 4.4 Ghz. Your CPU is going to be a slight bottleneck.

I currently have crossfired 6870 and while their nice on bf3. Most games dont support it well enough to not just get a good single card i also recommend a 7950.In some games swtor and guild wars 2 i get worse FPS than with a single 6870.
Worse than crack.

BF3 at 1080p with Ultra 4x MSAA requires more than 1 GB VRAM. so it will be unplayable on HD 6870 CF as you will run out of VRAM. Also the HD 7950 is vastly superior in DX11 games like BF3, Crysis 2, Max Payne 3.

here is the Sapphire HD 7950 Vapor-X with 950 Mhz boost for USD 330. comes with sleeping dogs game. I am currently playing the game and enjoying it.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202003

selling your HD 6870 should get you 100 bucks. so you would be spending 230 bucks nett. A single new HD 6870 costs 150 - 160 bucks after rebate.

For 70 - 80 bucks extra money a HD 7950 is a no brainer. add to it a new game which is well reviewed and the value is amazing.
