There was as much vitriol being spread at the introduction of 10.7 it dropped Rosetta which took out many actively used programs and we lost expose and spaces in favor of a more Linux like desktop management implementation . Apple drew a line in the sand you either crossed or no new Mac's for you, there has not been a mass exodus and people adapted. It'll work this way here to, some people will hang on Windows 7, some will adapt early, some will be forced to at replacement time and most don't care. Satan does not live and die by the quarter nor even a bad half decade there is a long term strategy here and they're going to stick with it.

I agree, it is a temporary fix ... it will buy the industry about 5-7 years. Hopefully Microsoft will get the message and put in an option for "Classic View", but if not, that will be a good amount of time for other OS developers to chip away at Microsoft's OS stranglehold and come up with a viable alternative.

IMHO there are viable alternatives for most office workers.

But yes I think Red Hat or someone else at that level needs to step in where Satan seem to be stepping out and a half decade is plenty of time to make that happen.

Yup, it's getting real close. We have about 4 programs that I have yet to find an alternative for in Linux. One of those programs will soon "die" in the next 6 months (an old accounting package we've been on, but have replaced and are running parallel now ... and they have a Linux version for it). I'm hoping that by 2014 I can find alternatives for the others too.

Then I can "cut the Microsoft cord" with the exception of maybe 2-3 dedicated stations, and totally cut Microsoft out of our office and free up God knows how many tens of thousands of dollars a year in software costs from OS upgrades and Microsoft Office.

If enough people complain, as I will by phone and email, they will give in to consumers. Vista was such a fail (I never disliked vista tbh but whatever) that Microsoft started asking consumers opinions for windows 7. (I dislike certain parts of W7 as well but not near as much as W8)
As already stated, many people will look for alternatives and maybe just maybe (doubtful) another os contender will emerge and give ms a run for their money.

And even if they are trying to cut costs and streamline everything it would not hurt them to change a few things around and add options for ui customization for desktop/laptop users.

As far as the full screen apps will/are there any third party work arounds? If so that could ease the pain a lot. A fix but not a cure.

Vista wasn't a fail, OEM's messed Vista's launch up. What is fail is the belief a lot of people cling to that Vista was fail without realising Win 7 is Vista 2.0 (SP 1 making it 2.1).

Actually, you forgot the other option.
Stick with Windows 7, give Microsoft no money for their new "look and method", and when you buy a new computer in the next 2 years, you will be able to still buy Windows 7 (see related article). After October 2014, when you can only buy Windows 8, you can still "downgrade" Windows 8 to Windows 7 (see another related article) and still not have to run their new "look and method".
If enough people hit Microsoft in their wallet, they will get the message, and relent. They are in the business to make money, and if enough people tell them to "Piss Off" with their wallet, there is a good chance that they will patch Windows 8 with "Classic View" and make Windows 9 something that Windows 8 should have been from the start.
You will be left in the dust, Microsoft will edge on making just as much money as it ever did leaving you few behind. Its pretty obvious the new Start Menu will be a part of Windows 9 by now. Losing a handful of customers like you is nothing to the corporate giant, as they get new customers every day.

It's also pretty obvious that 3 rd party apps will be around to fix what a lot of people think is broken.Glad you like the new start page but there are easily just as many or many more that think it is just total crap.

And there's a much larger number that don't care (people who buy prebuilt PCs).

HAHAHHAHAHA

Yeah, we will see about that.

Few. Snicker.

In case you haven't been keeping up with current events, the people who DISLIKE Windows 8 Metro aren't exactly "Few".

But what ever you can tell yourself to make it easier to sleep. thumb.gif

Yes, few. For every single person like yourself who makes accusations to bring a good thing down. Most of them changed their minds after actually using the OS. And for $14.99 there isn't really a reason not to update. Just because people don't like the new Start Menu (what its called, ofc you're wrong again) doesn't mean they wont go out and buy it. The new Start Menu doesn't make up for the OS as a whole. So again, you stick to your little posse and have fun with whatever you kids do.
