FRAPS on a dual-core

Thread Starter
Could FRAPS along with a game run on a dual-core? By run I mean smooth gameplay, not 5-10FPS torture and a video that nobody would watch.

Let's pick some popular games offered in benchmarks: Metro 2033, Battlefield 3, Crysis 2, Dirt 3, and World of Warcraft, which seems to have started appearing in benchmarks recently as well. Let's say the games run on DirectX 9/10 and the CPU frequency is below below 3Ghz. Say the resolution is 1280x720, both for the video and the game.

Give it a blast, see what happens? What CPU is it?

It's your HDD that is the problem over here. You'll get a steady framerate when recording to another HDD instead of the same one.

I can't do that at the moment, I remember trying it a long time ago, it turned out pretty bad... In fact, I had trouble playing that game without FRAPS at the time... Was it GTA 4 on lowest settings? I think I've also tried it with some version of Crysis OR Far Cry 2. I think it was Far Cry 2, which even without FRAPS ran rather low on FPS.

Anyway, was thinking of trying to record videos again: new version of software, drivers, Windows updates, etc.. I'd prefer not to stress my hardware at the moment though, so I would appreciate further posts. I will try it next month myself.

To answer the question: mine's Athlon 5200+, 2.6Ghz. Not overclocked, not Black Edition. smile.gif

Oh, and yes, I was recording it to the same HDD. I didn't know there was a difference, thought it depends ONLY on the CPU.

If you record to the same HDD, frames drops a lot, because the head is moving up and down the platter. It even depends on the CPU, but more on the HDD.

If I won't forget, I'll post the results when I'll try it, I have an old PATA disk.

That's good to know.
