It's more like GTX 460 -> GTX 580 in that sense.

GK104 is essentially half of GK110. So expect 690 performance (If not slightly faster) in a single GPU solution

Every other day we inch closer to finding out what Kepler is truly capable of. Keep the rumors coming, I know I'll be getting my hands on one.

As per Nvidia's naming convention, GK104 was initially supposed to be for the midrange GPU offerings, with GK100 being the highrange. However, GK104 performed so well that, coupled with yield issues, Nvidia decided to use GK104 for the highrange and save GK100 for the Kepler refresh. GK110 is the refresh of GK100, which we never got to see. So the reason people are so excited is that we finally get to see Kepler's full potential, as intended for the highrange.

That's how the tech world works. There's always something just around the corner that's better than what you can get at any given moment. The keys to avoiding that feeling of getting ripped off are to 1) follow the news so nothing catches you by surprise (we've "known" the 780 would use Gk110 for a while) and 2) be happy with what you have if it meets the performance parameters you decided you wanted when you built your system.
