AMD Current build help

I have a pretty good computer that was custom built, but i want to expand and grow and operate more heavy duty tasks because i am a music producer, so when producing music, the CPU spikes dramatically causing me to quit my sessions

so, would i be able to upgrade some components and hardware so i can be set for another couple years, or should i just look into a new build?
my specs are here:

CPU
Phenom II x4 965 3.40ghz stock

Your system has seen better days. I'd tell you to slap on some VRM cooling and push that 965 moderately and once PD hits the market; upgrade your CPU/mobo/memory and possible the card if you game.

or get a better motherboard now and then wait, because piledriver will work with the 9 series chipset, and this way he can get a good overclock now. i would get a board like a Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3, or an ASUS M5A97.

Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3:

ASUS M5A97:

EDIT: Btw, the Gigabyte mobo comes with 8gb or ddr3 ram, so that way you can get out of the DDR2 and double your ram!

So ive been having some HARD problems trying to produce music and i feel like my computer should be able to handle it but it is CPU spiking really bad and audio dropouts are occuring all the time... is it possible my computer is overheating ?? because i KNOW i should be able to run multiple tasks at once especially produce music...

well anyways, im guessing that might be the problem...so i looked at the back of the power supply where you plug in the power cord, and there was a sliding button that was red, and here is the picture sorry its no clear: efmpur.jpg

but basically one end says like 112 and when u slide it it says like 256 or something im not sure what it is?

Motherboard. If you load the CPU as frequently at you say and require top-most reliability and low heat levels, look for a large phase VRM setup (6+2-8+2) with heatsinks on your new board. The GA-970A-UD3 deal pointed above with the included 2x4GB DDR3-1600 kit for $110... I say it's perfect.  If you use the stock heatsink there's overclocking headroom to be had under that.

If your PSU works perfectly now then I think you really don't want to touch that slider... you might damage something.

PSU voltage selector won't give you those problems.
If you live in the US and/or have 120v coming out of the wall then that's what you choose, as opposed to UK/euro which produce electricity in the 230v range.

What music software are you utilizing?
Does this occur on a fresh Windows install (reformat)?
What kind of sound card or setup are you using? Do you require ASIO4ALL?
