[CVG] Battlefield 3: Stunning 'Alborz Mountains' flythrough video - Page 10

Hit detection is one of the biggest issues I am having with BF3. Getting shot behind cover and hits not registering are the two issues I encounter most. Definitely a game killer for me...and I have a good connection and play on servers with 20~30ms ping.

What do game devs have against proper vegetation? We have the GPU power. Let's see fields of grain or grass, actual underbrush, and something between tall tree and ankle-high shrub. If we've got wind-blown snowdust, give us wind effects on a lake. The vid isn't bad looking at all, mind you, I'm just annoys me a little that, while we have the ability to do things, and the machines to run them, we don't have devs willing to actually press the envelope of graphics in gaming. Start big, and let lower settings see less stuff.

But at 1:05 are those snowflakes hitting my visor? Can DICE please keep vision-impairing effects OUT of the goddamn game?
I have enough trouble seeing the pretty visuals through the suppression blur filter, the jam in my eyes, the 10x supernova sun and the hiroshima-sized dust/smoke clouds that every single grenade and bullet throws up into the air.
I'm not even exaggerating when I say that one of the biggest challenges in this game is just trying to SEE the game, on rainy maps the view distance gets reduced to almost nothing as if we're playing in a goddamn HURRICANE. I'm always looking at the ground to avoid getting blinded with the brain-exploding bloom.
DICE is offering some amazing cake, and then proceeding to cut our tongue and eyes out before we can eat or even see it.
These visuals will do absolutely nothing to help the foundation shooting mechanics, hit detection/registration issues, etc which all handle like absolute garbage, some of the worst I have experienced in any shooter ever. I stopped playing Recon because of the insanely stupid lens glare mechanic ("yoohoo, I'm over here!") and the slightest suppression making my bullets bend away from the target which makes no kind of sense at any level of physics/realism.
The hit registration combined with the huge recoil/spread of most guns, further combined with suppresion is really mind-numbingly frustrating to the point where I have to keep reminding myself not to take the game too seriously in order to stay sane.
As always, I will treat BF3 as a tank/Jet simulator, a sight-seeing experience and a benchmark for my system. Those are really it's only strengths.
Can't tell you how much I agree with you. I absolutely hate all the visual clutter and trash. This game would look so much better without all the crud and some actual color. I hate "art direction" sometimes.

Lol, my ping is usually below 30, there is one server where my ping is always 8 biggrin.gif

The netcode is client side. It doesn't matter if your ping is 15ms, if some douche joins with his 500ms ping, you're going to get shot around corners 2 seconds later. If the other person can see you when they shoot at you, you're dead. It doesn't matter if you're already down and behind cover when he started shooting, their laggy connection still sees you out in the open.

I'm not sure if we do. If you want a nice field of grass you're literally talking about billions of polys for decently complex models for blades of grass. Of course what with all that fancy technology like instancing it might be within the realm of possibility in limited quantities. But for huge BF3 maps with every else going on? I mean the game hits fairly hard as is.

def extreme examples and only 100 vids of it made? if it was such a wide spread issue im sure there would be a ton more and dice would address the issue.
Check that 100ms ping.
Not sure if you're being serious. When I said "there's like 100 more" I was generalizing, there's a LOT more than that. They are not extreme examples, a bunch of people here have already said they experience it on a regular basis. It's basically part of the game to die 1 second after taking cover.

Glad to hear problems go away at 16ms. Unfortunately a lot of us can't live next-door to the host server and have to put up with 50-90ms, which FYI by first person shooter standards is still extremely low & functional - atleast, in every shooter other than the Battlefield series.

The closest server to me gives 35ms and that's way too high for BF3 (apparently), I guess I'm totally screwed.

Oh well, back to TF2 where things make sense.

Looks awesome, although I cannot support anything that is the monster known as EA, no matter what game it is.

I think we should have options to enable "max graphics" while playing single player, and "multiplayer default graphics" while online. Makes the graphics nuts happy, makes the multiplayer people happy.
