Hi all

I've made the decision to upgrade my SSD from a vertex 2 to either a Samsung 830 or a OCZ Vertex 4.

Thing is its cheaper (in the case of the Samsung) to get 2 x 128 Gb drives ($112 each) than it is to get a 256Gb drive ($249), for the Vertex the price works out the same ($125 for 128Gb vs $249 for 256Gb).
What i'm trying to figure out is if i get the two drives, what i am leaning towards, should i run them in Raid 0 or just as separate drives eg one for OS and programs like office etc and the other for game installs? Now I understand that at present TRIM is not supported in Raid 0 however, I have heard that Intel is going to release new raid controler drives for the x79 chipset that will enable Trim in Raid 0 so that problem will be resolved.

I use my pc for gaming and general use, net movies etc, no data base etc sort of stuff. Also I use HDDs for my media storage so the SSD will not come into it for media streaming etc.

Will Raid 0 give me a noticeable performance boost or should i just stick with running 2 separate drives or one larger one?

Thoughts?

I generally stick with whatever is less complicated. So 1x 256GB. It's also faster than a 128GB due to how the channels are populated with memory chips. I'll be upgrading from my Crucial C300 128GB to probably a Plextor M5 Pro 256GB later in the year. And I'll keep the 128 around as a testbed drive for alternate OSes etc...

I personally like raid 0. I dont need to transfer files at 1Gbs rate but i do like really low load times and the snappy response of anything rally on the pc.

Why do you NEED 256GB of SSD storage? If I were you, I'd rather pick up a single 128GB SSD and use it as the OS drive. Frankly I can't notice a difference between 500MB/s and almost 1GB/s when booting into the OS. Up to you, though.

Also: RAID0 on SSD's = no TRIM function.

Seriously? I find with Windows, a few other programs and games the 120 is full in no time.

SSD's are NOT meant for mass storage (Music, videos, pictures or games). They are supossed to contain the OS, updates and main software that will be used in the PC. For other things, Mechanical drives should be used.

At least that's the way I'd set it up.

e.g. 64/128GB SSD for OS + 500/1,000GB HDD for games and other media including file paging.

We've had this argument many times. We know SSD's can degrade their performance and have a tight writing limit on each block . Sure, they'd still last around 6 years with a heavy writing use but why risk it?
