Firewall

Been a while since I've run a (software) firewall, but now because of two factors: one I'm on an 8 core now so I might as well and two: I'm an admining a game server and website so chance of me going hacked has gone up exponentially.

What's worth running these days? I'm running Avast as my anti-virus solution. Used to run Outpost as my firewall. Is that still any good? Anything better now?

Actually I must admit I've been running Windows Firewall. tongue.gif

Nothing more hardcore around? As I say I'm under quite a high risk of being hacked. One of the communities we're competing with for members is getting quite upset because pretty much all of their senior members who aren't staff have either left to join us or flirted with joining us. biggrin.gifthumb.gif

Go hardware bro, setup a spare server and run pfsense on it.

There's really no point to a software firewall as your network card will still accept the packets which doesn't eliminate network lag and it requires the host machine to process those packets. The only good it will do is to block random ports. What kind of "hacking" is going on? What games are you running?

None has gone on so far. wink.gif

I just know in the past when I've done similar things, I have had various attempts on my computer.

It's just a CS:S server, but apparently CS:S is serious business these days. doh.gif

I agree, pfSense is the way to go.

www.pfsense.org

Just get an old computer, throw a second NIC card in it, and go nuts. The hardware requirements are very low.

This "hacking" is mostly exploits in the game engine. I run a firewall on my setup due to DDoS attacks. Most of which don't even saturate 100mbps, others are layer 7 attacks. Easily blockable with a packet capture. It doesn't however block exploits in the Quake 3 engine you have to do your research and know the flaws and how to fix them. Source engine has it's flaws, there are many many posts on them on various game forums. The hardest part is to determine what exploits you need to fix.

Still confused on what these "attempts" are, how did you know they tried to access your computer?
