You need an actual tool to monitor dips. Pre over clock you might record 46fps min then after an over clock your min might now be 53fps but you would never know it because your not recording data properly. Your conscious human eye to brain refresh rate might be once every 10 seconds when fraps is much faster.
Your just gonna waist peoples time without using a tool to record fps.

Waste*

Anyway, yeah.. Even render.drawfps will show you some results. rolleyes.gif

I am using render.drawpfs right now. I am watching the FPS in game. This is how i know what my frames dip to. Believe me, I am a Frames Nazi.. I see them dip to 80 and I immediately try to fix some settings.

So from my experience so far.. overclocked to 4.5ghz I am looking at still not having fantastic framerate. 80~120 on mostly high settings. It's acceptable frown.gif I am wondering what a 3770k would do tho.

Totally agree with this, thats why in my example i used minimums in the example. But average is important too. My gtx570 at 900mhz was only about 4fps less in the minimum than my gtx670 at 1230mhz but the average was a lot more than that and feels smoother to play. I think what sucks is with multiplayer maps the minimum can be very inconsistent too such as bf3. I have some stored data on the same map and same player counts, same everything but the mins have a 3-5fps variation.

Guess the point is to record a bunch of data and get decent averages for min/max/ave in the games one plays. BF3 screws with us on this because the spawn menu drops to the 60-70fps range (cant remember) no matter what, so if you die more your average will be less than a good player even on the same system. Also the mins can vary a lot too depending on the type of play that occurs on a given map. (m320/grenade fest vs less explosions)

Man I hear ya, I went through this when I switched to my 670 from the 570. I went nuts comparing but instead your comparing single 670 to sli670. My main point to recommend fraps or another logging method was to be sure you recorded the true minimum fps and not just what your eye caught. Honestly Im on a single 670 with a 120hz monitor (1080, ultra, msaa off and blur off) and have no problems with choppy play and I stick to 64player matches on vanilla and CQ maps. Dont let the numbers ruin your gameplay. Ultimatly there is either a driver/bf3/gpu limit that seems to scale these SLIGHTLY poorer than one would think, we all know double the performance isnt to be expected but this issue I have seen on other 2600k/670sli users so decided not to sli for now myself. Best part is now I felt ok buying a soundcard, only reason I ran without one for a while since building the matx setup.

I sort of still feel like the game runs plenty fine on mostly high settings. I don't really have any complaints other than the SLIGHTLY occasional noticable slowdown. My main thing is.. will this go away with a i7-3770k? If so, I am willing to spend the ~$100 to upgrade to that processor. I would just like some hard evidence if this is, in fact, going to improve my overall performance concerning dips in fps.

BF3 doesn't utilise HT in anyway, no games do from my knowledge. From my experience from 4-Way GTX680's to 2x GTX680's peformance is far better than it was with 4 GPU's, but the dips you speak of is an ongoing complaint from many users over on the BF3 forums myself included. There is an issue when playing on large maps like Caspian. Basically the games last patch screwed SLI up a little and there seems to be spikes in gameplay for no apparent reason.

Nvidia actually mentioned it was a problem with the game, although i've not seen much driver enhancements for BF3 at all for the 600 series oddly enough. They seem to be catering for older gen cards atm with a lot of titles. It's really upto DICE/EA to sort it out as they are the culprit for the problems at present, but i won't hold my breath.

You should really check this thread out: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2249262
In Single Player Benchmarks (how almost every site does it) BF3 sees no gains for HT.
In Multiplayer, it seems to make a whopping difference. This guy did a lot of work and they did some good research and it seems indeed to make a difference to have HT on BF3 multiplayer, especially those large maps.

I can only give you some insight to this. It MIGHT help you out. I have run a 2500k at 4.8ghz, 3570k at 4.8ghz and my now 2700k at 4.8ghz all on bf3 back with a gtx570 at 900mhz. The i5's ran at probably 60-70% use, I think maybe more, I have screenshots saved with graphs showing it. The weird thing was which I wasnt expecting when I switched to the 2700k was that I was able to push my settings a little more. I played on 1080p with basically ultra- msaa off and blur off. Game was smooth. BUT if I started giving it msaa (2x even) on the i5 and 570 it would drop fps too much and I could feel the dip. When I switched to the 2700k I was able to play smooth on 2x msaa and 4x msaa felt nearly perfect but would occasionally dip fps and then I could feel a lag. Now all those cpu's where in the SAME system. I dont see how msaa was able to run higher on a cpu swap since I figured it was all done by the gpu, but the 2700k did allow higher msaa if I chose to run it. I still played with msaa off and currently still do even with the 670 since I cant see the difference and I enjoy the extra fps. But Im just sharing this with you since there does seem to be something about HT that helps out in bf3.

If money isnt an issue considering your on a 670 sli, I would try the 3770k for fun, not EXPECTING an improvement, but honestly you might see an improvement in gameplay, even if the fps numbers dont change much. It might get smoother.

That's the kind of speculation I am looking for! haha. That anandtech thread certainly makes me think it might be worth it. It's not that i want to spend another $100.. but I've already invested this much into the system I'd like to see it work the way i want it to. On a lighter note, did some BF3 (a few hours) on the 4.5ghz today and it's running buttery. My FPS do drop sometimes, but rarely if at all does it feel like my frames visually lag. So not bad smile.gif better than before the overclock for sure.
