[Build Log] CattleProd - Black-on-Black Watercooled Bitfenix Prodigy Gaming Build - Page 3

I'm also considering push/pull on top, but I plan to have a set of fans and the rad on the outside. Here's Gomi's post in the Prodigy Owners thread in response to what I was thinking of doing.

Even though external mounts are usually ugly, I think with a customized fan/rad cover, it would look a hell of a lot nicer. I plan to save some funds to get a rotary tool and start modding the case a bit and contact Dwood about a fan cover.

I think a lot of us in OCN have come to an agreement that the Prodigy is not SFF. While the idea of small components is there, the case is just too big and most of the time, the space is not utilized like most SFF builds. I once called it a MFF (Medium Form Factor) case and I'm hoping more people think of it that way.

Thanks for all the votes and input, guys. I have decided to stick with push only inside the case for now, until I see how my temperatures are. If I later decide to go with push-pull with fans on top of the case, I can always add them without much effort. This will delay even more $$$ put on the credit card bill for my wife to see, anyway. Poll is closed.

On another note, my Bitspower reservoir was still backordered as of this morning, so I canceled that order and put in an order for a Tecnofront Nano (Black), along with some extra cables and connectors I was needing. The Nano res should be sweet (and available!) so maybe I'll be able to get the loop up some time in the next week or so. thumb.gif

Update/Teaser:

My reservoir arrived yesterday: the Tecnofront Nano (Black).

7986687602_fc9fc4c615.jpg

It’s small and black, and those are the two primary qualities for any component of this build, obviously.

7986687848_1fe3287a3d.jpg

I got a really big kick out of the documentation that came with the res—it’s basically not much more than what’s typically inside of a fortune cookie, except the Engrish is way, way worse. laughingsmiley.gif

7986679937_e1a8bedc32.jpg

So… needless to say, I’m not planning on depending on too much support from Tecnofront if I run into problems. But the res itself seems really cool and well made. I like it a lot.

Now for a fun project that I haven’t mentioned yet. See if you can guess what this is for?

7986687406_bd3209f5f0.jpg

…Yup, I’m painting my AP-15s. I’m using the Duplicolor Vinyl & Fabric dye on the right. The color is flat black. The other can in the pic is some Krylon Fusion that I bought as a backup in case I couldn’t find any vinyl & fabric dye, but I ended up finding the Duplicolor at a local auto supply chain and I think it will work well. The drops you see on the can are just rain from bringing the can in from my truck while it was raining.

First we take apart our fans…

7986680155_cf3359b88c.jpg

Then we tape ‘em up.

7986688690_c84a15fe6b.jpg

I’ve done a few coats of the fabric & vinyl dye on the fans, and the stuff isn’t the easiest to work with. You have to shake it up really well and keep shaking and keep moving the can, otherwise, it’s like splattering ink. Not at all like spraying with a normal can of spray paint. Wear gloves and be careful because the stuff will go everywhere. But as far as the application to the fans, it goes on really well and soaks in quite nicely. I’ll post some pics after I finish all the coats and give it a chance to dry over the weekend.

Promising! thumb.gif That res is adorable, fits in well with the case, and can't wait to see how the fans turn out.

Sorry for the lack of updates. Everyone in my house is sick, including my 16 mo. old. so time has been precious.

So, here are the fans:

8009284450_9a9d7ebe87.jpg

They turned out okay. I wish I had skipped the vinyl dye and just done the spray paint, because I ended up using a final coat of spray paint. The vinyl dye is just too splattery to work with.

Also, I must have went through 30 retaining rings trying to put these fans back together. If anyone is looking for replacement retaining rings (the clips holding the fan inside the housing underneath the sticker), they are McMaster-Carr part # 98541A111 Black-Finish Steel External Retaining Ring, for 3MM Shaft Diameter, $5.00 for 100 of them, free shipping.

I went ahead and did my final tubing runs, and made a few tweaks to the fitting order and it turned out great.

8009285082_25239544be.jpg

I decided I needed a fill/drain port on top to hold the reservoir in place better, so I drilled out a hole. Did a test fill and drain and everything works perfectly without a leak.

8009284922_c4a906829b.jpg

This is the temporary port, it's since been replaced with an Enzotech one, but you get the idea:

8009285334_8c89d789a3.jpg

Last night I filled the loop, and put in the PSU and ran all the wires. When I can I will take some glamor shots.

Next up... Case window! I ordered my acrylic and supplies, as well as a nice Makita barrel jigsaw with some appropriate blades. I'll post some updates on how the case window project is going, once I get started. Gotta decide whether I want to do just right-side or both sides... hmmm...

In the meantime I'm downloading apps and games and going to start overclocking. Thanks for reading, and I'll try to get some better pictures up with a real camera soon, MDPC-style wink.gif
