Realistic, best case throughput on a USB 2 device is about 240-320 mbps, and in the case of 802.11ac that assumes you are in an ideal location relative to the router. Given that there are 450 mbps N routers out there and assuming that they can push out half that after overhead, what is the point of 802.11ac exactly?

Once PCIe/USB 3 adapters come out, then we'll have a viable product.

I have studied wireless technology professionally in some detail so i am part qualified to talk (without sounding too arrogant redface.gif)

in simple terms all wireless is backwards compatible to an extent, and all wireless is designed to interact as best as possible with other wireless networks in range. What this translates to currently is a 40MHZ wide 300MBPS channel only works in an almost green field site with no other networks. As soon as your router detects other wireless lans on the same channels at enough SNR it is part of the standard to unbond and drop to 20mhz 144/150 MCS rate on a single stream to reduce co-channel interference and be nice and friendly.

This methodology is applicable to 5ghz too and therefore 5ghz AC. So, initially early adopters will see large gains as there are 19 non overlapping channels, but remember you are bonding more! So, as more people move onto 5ghz over the next 5-10 years the amount of freely available channels from co-located wireless networks will become less and it will be much the same case as is now. 160mhz channels will be a very rare occurrence, auto bonding, unbonding will fluctuate rates continually.


My point is, this technology is of great benefit to anyone who has clean air and can use the extended 5ghz wireless features or the judicious corporate admin who meticulously designs what access points are co-located. It will be faster no doubt (driver issues will be fun rolleyes.gif) but in the end the wire will still rule for those who want a stable data rate at over 1Gbps.
