India has bigger issues right now, like retrofitting it's power grid so the 600 million people don't lose power all at once. But yea, 256kbps is terrible and sad, I hope you guys are able to get the number up soon.

I had 256kbs for a few years, it's good enough for general internet browsing and playing games. You just can't download any large files or stream video. That kinda sucks but it's not like being on dialup.

Still beats the old days when I first started being "online" ...

Its not like resources aren't available. Private ISPs have have gained monopoly mostly due to the fact most Indians here take what they can get. What's worse is that certain ISPs have openly voiced against network neutrality and the end consumer suffers.

256kb/s isn't nearly enough. A simple YouTube video takes forever to buffer

There are a handful of cities where local ISPs deviate from corporate evil and actually provide decent plans. There's this one local ISP, Beam Fiber...they have pretty decent plans (compared to what private ISPs offer). 15mb/s with a data cap of 40GB post which speeds are throttled to 4mb/s for 18$ a month. Sadly, Beam Fiber is only exclusive to one particular city ATM

Compare this to a typical private ISP. 2mb/s with a data cap of 10GB post which speeds are 256kb/s for the same amount. Go figure

^^ Crazy9000 mentioned 256kb/s isn't as bad as being on dialup. That may be true in the case of wired broadband, but wireless dongle-based services take the cake. One particular brand (and that brand has cars selling in the U.S and Europe BTW) advertises "unlimited" 3.1mb/s dongle-based internet for 18$ a month. The terms and conditions section reveals a different story. Its 3.1mb/s(and you never actually get those speeds, probably 800kb/s tops) till a data cap of 5GB post which speeds are throttled to 128kb/s till 7GB post which speeds are further throttled to 35kb/s. You'd think even with those speeds you can keep an overnight download running...but the system is rigged for auto-disconnection every 3 hours

^ this. 1000 times this. If you pay for X speed and only get Y, then you should only have to pay a percentage of your bill. If the govt actually looked after the peoples interests instead of their corporate masters this would be in effect to force telecoms to provide the service they sell.

Thats wireless,gets to about 22Mb wired

I'm paying 67.80 for 24Mb download and 768kbps Upload via DSL. Not everyone can get it as you have to be close to the exchange,I could throw a stone and hit mine ha.

Fiber is really only in the major cities and towns at the minute and its been "coming to your area" since 09.Generally fiber is alot cheaper than the DSL packages aswell

This is just salt in my wounds. My internet (that really wasn't mine, but the previous person whom lived here) got cut off today, so I have to tether from my phone until Monday. On Monday though, I get 100 Mbit/s both up and down, no cap, no throttling.

Pity this dual nationality doesn't work with ISPs lol
