You can buy upwards of a dozen items all for one character. All weapons are viable, and have different skill sets. Since you can trade, you could buy them for alts too. So even if someone did buy a lot, that doesn't mean they were reselling them and "exploiting" the system. They banned people who bought a couple items off of vendors for their own use, nothing about that is exploiting the system. The vendor prices were wrong, not their fault.
I bought a couple for myself, and was not banned. I didn't even know the prices were wrong at the time, until I saw them skyrocket the next day. My RL friend however was banned just for buying one, and he kept it for his own use. Not everyone that was banned exploited, they messed up and it's probably why they changed it to a 72 hour ban because some of the bans were legit players.
I don't play, so I can't make too harsh of comments towards ANet, but what was this "exploit"? Was it simply they priced their items wrong and people with enough money could buy them? Is there some stat that lowers vendor prices like the "Barter" stat in Fallout?
I am all for banning, permanently, people who go out of their way to find and exploit bugs or other flaws in the system. But if this was a situation where just by speaking to the vendor you could purchase items at a reduced price, from what they should be, that is not the fault of the player. That is more of a mistake on the dev's side and they are punishing the players for being entrepreneurial, as they were given the chance to do so.
If I am waltzing around Wondervillecamelpool World and I see a vendor has a really awesome item for 8 copper, I am going to buy the snot out of it and give it to my friends or sell it if the price goes up later. Now if I found out that by putting a bucket on that vendors head, spinning in circles 12 times, eating a Grobblerage Fruit in front of him, and then jumping on his tent caused the price to drop, and did this over and over, I would fully expect a ban hammer to come crashing into my face.
