I had a silverstone 450w sfx that blew up on me and just before it did I noticed crackling, sort of like an electrical static sound coming from it when I plugged the cord in. So while I'm waiting for a new one I'm using my tx650, and I noticed today that it too is making the crackling noise but not all the time, it comes and goes. I turned it off straight away. Why is this? There must be something wrong somewhere but I have no idea where to start. Surely both PSUs wouldn't start making crackling noises randomly. Does anyone know what could be wrong?

Maybe its not the PSU making the noise?

Have you tried a different Power outlet? Are you connecting the computer to an Power Extender unit? Is it a Power saving unit? Maybe you have a loose fan inside your system, not screwed in all the way. If this continues Maybe something inside your PC is not connected properly, is there any components touching the bare metal of the case? If i were you i would rebuild the whole PC, two PSUs one day sounds fishy.

I'm pretty sure it is but I could be wrong. It's the exact same noise the other psu was making. If not what else could it be?

I had it connected to a power board, don't think it's power saving or anything. But I changed it so the psu is connected directly to the wall outlet. The noise doesn't seem to be there for now but like I said before it comes and goes. I'm going to be fitting some water cooling parts soon so maybe I can wait until then to rebuild it all. I'll just keep an eye out for the noise and hopefully nothing happens.

If it is DEFINITELY the PSU, then we have a separate problem as two power supplies having the same problem in the same machine is fishy (as above poster pointed out).
Take it all out and run it on a non-conductive surface outside of the case with minimal components necessary to get a picture on the screen.

Sometimes this can be caused by issues with your house's electrical wiring. A friend of mine experienced this issue when he installed CFL bulbs in a dimmer circuit meant for incandescent bulbs. Somehow this put a great deal of electrical noise into the building's wiring and this caused the PSU to make noise. I still don't understand quite what happened, but the noise went away when he switched the CFLs for incandescents.
It could be something similar for you. Or maybe not. It's hard to say.

It could be something similar for you. Or maybe not. It's hard to say.

Wow what the heck - I thought the lights and power circuit separation should have avoided anything like that!

I'm almost certain it was the power board causing issues. Ever since I plugged the psu directly into the wall socket it hasn't been making the noise.
