What's your total budget?

The A6/A8/A10 are sensitive to low speed memory but the lower end dual core A4s do not need to be fed by so much RAM power without bottleneck. That said I consider dual channel a minimum standard for all APUs, but it's not a problem. A 2x2GB kit can usually be found at the same price (perhaps less) than a 4GB DIMM. Case in point: this Kingston 2x2GB kit on eBuyer.

Just like to say thanks to all for the help. Much appreciated.

I settled on the athlon II, but suppliers mucked up big style, delayed my whole order and didn't tell me. I had to complain that it did not turn up for them to do anything!

Anyway, processor out of stock, got an AMD FX-4 4100, probably a lot more than i needed, but my whole system was specced and changed a lot to incorporate expandability.

All up and running now, just need to start configuring server software now, again thanks all for the advice.

My goal with most of my home server builds is to do it as cheap as possible and "zero" overkill.Overkill has its place but not with home servers.I once read a pretty good saying about overkill "excellence is the absence of excess".This fits with home servers,try to do it cheap and no excess in the components.
