Y'know, had they waited to release the card when the drivers WERE optimized and setup to run correctly, we probably wouldnt even need to have this discussion. The G80 would probably just be burning up competition so seriously that nobody (myself and other ATI brethren included) could say otherwise.

We shall have this same discussion when the R600 comes out as well I'd assume. "Oh, its way ahead of its time" - "No its not! It doesnt come close to cards a year older than it!" - "Bologna! This card is way too l337ne$$ for you! Go play w/ ur S3 graphics fanboy!"

The debate goes on! I'm tired of it really. Its all about personal preference really. I for example, have a sour history with nVidia and would just prefer to use ATI whom I've had nothing but great success with ever since I switched. And that was years ago, back when the Voodoo cards were king of the hill.

I find the fact that a single 8800GTX beats X1950XTX crossfire plenty impressive, thank you.

I hold no allegiance to either. Last month I had an Nvidia card, now I have an ATI........in a month I'll have the 8800GTX. I'm exactly the sort of person the whole industry aims at, a tech freak.

Oh as do I! I'm saying that nobody ELSE would be debating it... I have a X1950XTX, I know how fast those SOB's are... for a single card to beat TWO of them, I know its gotta be killer.

Things that don't quite make sense:

Why put on 768Mb of memory instead of just going the whole hog and throwing on 1gb?

Why 2x PCI-e powre connectors when 1 is supposedly rated to handle to power consumption?

Why the hell is it so huge?!

and most importanly:

WHY DO YOU US GUYS GET IT SO MUCH CHEAPER?!
$650 USD for the 8800GTX? Thats about £340.
$500 USD for the 8800GTS? Thats about £260

In the UK, the 8800GTX is £490. Thats roughly $930.
In the UK, the 8800GTS is £380. Thats roughly $720.

The BFG HS cover design pwns all.

These new G80's are running on brand spanking drivers, probably chucked out there with the card without being properly optimized. In a month or so after they have been optimized or tweakerized by nerds then these cards will rock and put distance between them and everything else, even more than now.

And there is no 50% increase in power consumption, if you look at the reviews and benchies the G80's don't consume that much more than the X1950XTX, infact Nvidia only suggest a minimum of a 430W Psu to do the job
But the drivers for the x1950's aren't optimized yet either. Almost all benchmarks I've seen, including the 3dmark total scores on OCN, are all owned by x1900's in crossfire. Don't you think it's possible that once it happens the x1950's will come into their own and be competitive? It's like trying to compare to cars that don't have real engines in them yet.
