You thought that is the best looking console game? The graphics looks oooooo dated! I own a 360 and a PS3, both running HDMI and setup for 1080p. The PS3 looks terrible next to my 360. Forza 4 and Max Payne 3 on my 360 are stunning. GoW, GT5, and Uncharted 3 are jagged. The only time I get a decent picture from my PS3 is when I play a Bluray and for that I just use my dedicated player.

OT : Really looking forward to see what the next Xbox can do! Hope the within one year timeframe is right. Definately do for a console update.

I just hope Sony does a better job on cooling solutions for their next model. I just got a PS3 (found it) and the cooling on it is not only loud but lousy too.

Whilst I agree on the current gen consoles that the cooling was loud on the PS3, just compare it to the 360. Most of the 360's went RROD ( Red ring of death ) because the parts were overhearting and being damaged. Then after nearly 6 years and they bring out the "slim" version, right back to square one with horrible cooling.

I do think that the Next gen do need to lean more on cooling, rather than getting as much hardware as possible into this small box with a passive heat sink and single fan. rolleyes.gif

Seriously? You do realize that you cannot compare consoles to computers at all. The code for console games is optimized incredibly better for their hardware as it is all the same. The only hardware difference is between systems which there are only two "high-end" systems. This means that coders only need to worry about two sets of hardware rather than millions of combinations. You will get far better graphics for the hardware therefore you cannot compare a $400 laptop. The hardware that will be needed for a computer to produce the same quality graphics as you will see in a console will be much greater then just buying the console. That and their ease of use, literally plug and play, is why consoles are doing so strong.

How do people STILL not get this concept?!

Because it's flawed, to a significant degree.

Yes, there are certainly console specific optimizations and console specific hardware that can make comparisons difficult. However, to a large degree, what a console can accomplish with specific hardware, a PC can accomplish with similar hardware. Their are exceptions, but they are exceptions, not the rule, and they tend to crop up late in a console's lifespan. Most people arguing otherwise neglect the fact that most current console games are run at 720p or less, with 25-30 fps.

Even some newer games run surprisingly well on PC hardware that is similar to consoles. Take the Witcher 2 for example. While I was never able to get this to run well on roughly PS3 equivalent PC hardware (my NVIDIA 7900 only gave me about 12 fps at 720p low-medium quality), I was able to get it to run on the closest equivalent XBox 360 hardware (a Radeon 2900GT, which has a similar shader layout and FLOPS, as well as close enough fill rate) with a solid 20-30 fps at 720p, with similar IQ to the XBox 360 version. In addition to helping explain why porting this game to PS3 is taking a while (the PS3 GPU has pathetic shader power, so they likely need to significantly optimize the game to off load more stuff to the Cell BE), it also suggests that the level of overhead on Windows/PC platforms is overstated.

exactly, a pair of 8800GTX and a core 2 quad is release 1year after the console out. They almost match graphic quality with the console @ 720p today.

guess what? get a socket 2011 platform + a pair of 7970, they will max everything PS4/Next Xbox offer. biggrin.gif is it worth it? it depends on how many games u gonna buy for the next 7-10years, because u save $20 each game u buy, with steam discount u can even save $40-50 each. And a desktop isnt just for gaming.

2 8800s can do much better than "match" 720p console levels. I had a single 8800 and console fan friends absolutely drooled over BC2, Crysis, and GTA IV with mods. That's one thing PC has a huge advantage in. Modability. You can make a 5 year old game look as good as a brand new release if the community has the mod tools to reskin/retexture/etc. Look at GTA IV and Arma 2. New mods came out for them years after their release and their sales blew their previous records off the charts. Arma 2 has seen more sales in the few months since DayZ's release than it had in its entire lifetime before DayZ, and that's for a MOD that is in ALPHA stage.

If only we can make more developers aware that they can use their own community to boost sales by giving them some empowerment (development tools), PC would be "ahead" of the game again in sales, like back in the BF1942/Starcraft/Diablo 2 era. I remember back when HL1 had a ton of mods coming out. My friends and I couldn't even choose which one to play for the night.
